Abstract
535,427. Repairing coke ovens. JACKSON, L. MELLERSH-. (Koppers Co.). Oct. 6, 1939, No. 27404. [Class 51 (ii)] To repair a damaged heating-wall of a coke oven without putting the other heating-walls out of action, one or more heat insulating shields are placed in the ovens on each side of the wall to be repaired and against the heating- walls so as to reduce the transmission of heat to the region between the shields to an extent sufficient to allow repair work on the damaged wall to proceed. The shields 10, Fig. 1, consist of a rectangular frame 19 to which is secured perforated material 17 such as woven wire, expanded metal or the like covered with a plastic heat insulating compound 18. Fig. 5 shows part of an oven with a damaged heating- wall to be restored, the upper part of the wall being supported by suspension rods 26 and plates 27. The shields 10 are pushed into the oven chambers 20 on removable rails 21 by the coke ram so as to cover the heating walls 22. Projections 16 on the top edges of the shields engage with the top part of the damaged wall and retain the shields in a vertical position. When it is desired to repair one end only of a wall the part of the oven chamber adjacent the remaining part of the wall is blanked off and temporary flue connections made to retain it in operation during repairs.
