Abstract

524,934. Sulphates of aluminium, copper, iron and zinc. GLASER, W. Feb. 9, 1939, No. 4313. [Class 1 (iii)] Waste sulphuric acid obtained in the petroleum refining industry is added to a boiling suspension of argillaceous earth or metal ores or a metallic salt solution derived therefrom, so slowly that the acid enters immediately into chemical combination, the free acid averaging throughout the process not more than 6 per cent. and preferably less than 3 per cent. expressed in percentage of SO 3 the organic impurities in the acid being thereby precipitated. Suitable substances are bauxite, clay and aluminium salts to obtain aluminium sulphate, zinc ores and cement copper. In the case of aluminium the precipitated tar is removed at the end of the reaction and either ammonium or potassium sulphate added and the solution concentrated to 30‹BÚ. On cooling an alum separates and the process is repeated. When the ferrous sulphate present reaches its saturation point it crystallizes out while hot, thus it need not contaminate the alum. The separation of ferrous sulphate is facilitated by the presence of free sulphuric acid.
