Abstract

515,956. Surgical optical instruments. TREISSMAN, F. V. June 16, 1938, No. 17889. [Class 81 (ii)] Apparatus for localising lesions of the interior of the eye comprises a small lamp mounted on a carrier and a small cautery mounted on the carrier in fixed relationship to the lamp, so that when the lamp and cautery are together inserted behind the eye the lamp lies immediately behind the cautery. As shown, the lamp A is carried by a holder B and is normally covered by a cap B<1> provided with an aperture B in alignment with the lamp. A ring cautery C lies in a flat recess C<1> formed partly in the cap B<1> and partly in the holder B, and is concentric with the aperture B<2>. A sheet of insulating material B<3> is disposed between the cauterv and the base of the recess C<1>. The cautery and lamp are connected through cables D<1> D<2> to plugs D3, D4 adapted to co-operate with a socket at the upper end of a handle furnished with three leads connected to a source of current such as a battery. The current is supplied from two of the leads to the plugs D<3>, D4 and flows back from the cautery and the lamp through a common return consisting of the metal casing of the cables D<1>, D and a co-operating conducting socket on the handle connected to the third lead. The handle is provided with a switch controlling the circuit to the cautery C, which switch may be so constructed that when depressed it only momentarily closes the circuit. In use, the lamp and cautery are inserted behind the eye until the spot of light from the lamp appears, when viewed in an ophthalmoscope, to coincide with the lesion, whereupon the switch is operated so that the cautery makes a small burn on the sclerotic thus indicating exactly the area for surgical treatment.
