Abstract

501,924. Printing-machines. FOWERAKER, T. S., and SARGENT, T. Sept. 8, 1937, No. 24510. [Class 100 (ii)] Inking-apparatus.- The surface of an inking roller 1, particularly for use in machines using rapidly drying inks, is provided with minute cells 2 of square or other shape whereby a predetermined quantity of ink is carried to the printing forme. A metal or other scraper is mounted on the inkduct 6 to remove surplus ink from the roller. To enable the roller to be driven while the remainder of the machine is at rest, the roller is normally driven from a gear 22 on the shaft of the forme cylinder 7 through a gear 23 loose on the shaft 17 of the roller 1 the gear 23 carrying a pawl 24 engaging a ratchet wheel 25 fast on the shaft 17. A second ratchet wheel 19 is fast on the shaft 17 and, when the normal drive ceases, this wheel is adapted to be driven by a pawl 18 on a sprocket wheel 16 driven from an electric motor 14. Specification 433,132 is referred to. According to the Provisional Specification the rollers 1 may have circumferential or longitudinal grooves instead of square &c. cells.
