Abstract
509,838. Oil engines. ASSOCIATED EQUIPMENT CO., Ltd., and SEMMONS, W. J. Jan. 21, 1938, No. 2093. [Class 7 (iii)] In an engine in which the air charge rotates about the cylinder axis and is forced into a combustion chamber 13, of smaller crosssection than the cylinder bore, in the piston or cylinder head, recesses 24 are formed in the chamber at the points towards which the fuel jets issuing from a nozzle 21 are delivered. The recesses may be part-spherical and may or may not extend to the end face of the piston. Alternatively, the recesses may be partcylindrical and may extend to the end wall 17 of the chamber, which may be provided with a cusp-shaped projection 31. The air is introduced into the cylinder through a masked valve 20 and/or a tangential passage 18. The nozzle 21 may be inclined to the cylinder axis so that its discharge end lies on the axis of the chamber, which may be off-set from the cylinder axis.
