Abstract
508,881. Treating waste liquids. PETERSEN, K. Feb. 9, 1938, No. 4115. Convention date, Feb. 23, 1937. [Class 111] Waste liquids are subjected to an aerobic biological treatment in a rotating or oscillating solid-waned container through which oxygencontaining gases are passed, a portion of alreadytreated liquid or sludge arising therefrom, with or without an additional aerobic biological treatment, being added to the liquids under treatment. In the construction shown in Figs. 1 and 2, a rotatable container 1 adapted to be driven through gearing 3, 5 is divided by grids 23 into compartments 21 which are partly filled with culture-carrying bodies 25 such as stone chippings, pieces of wood or cork, &c. The container is connected to a conduit 31 for waste liquid and a conduit 27 through which an oxygen-containing gas mixture, e.g. air, can be blown or drawn. The waste liquid after treatment leaves the container through outlet 17, a portion of the sludge being separated and restored. to the container 1, if desired, after reactivation. In a modification shown in Fig. 3, the container 1 is divided by a sieve 35 into a chamber 37 containing grinding bodies such as balls, rods, &c. and a chamber 41 provided with blades 43 and with a reticular drum 45. The drum 45, which contains culturecarrying bodies 25 and already-treated liquid or sludge, is rotatable independently of the container 1 and its movement may be intermittent, if desired. In a further construction shown in Figs. 5 and 6, the container 1 is also divided into two chambers, the chamber 41 being provided with reticular drums 55 containing culture-carrying bodies 25. The drums are eccentrically mounted in brackets 59 carried by the container. Blades 65 are provided on the interior surface of the container. The waste liquid is supplied through conduit 29, and air is blown through perforated tubes 67. Aeration of waste liquid may also be effected by means of stationary or movable air-diffusers. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 8, perforated tubes 73 in the container 1 are connected by radial pipes 75 with a hollow core 77 in which is mounted an air supply conduit 79 provided with a longitudinal slot 81. Air is thus supplied only to the tubes 73 which are immersed in the waste liquid. In other apparatus, rotating brooms or propellers are provided within the container for improving contact of the air with the liquid treated. For this purpose also part of the liquid may be converted into foam. Specification 476,772 is referred to.
