Abstract

507,964. Endless-track vehicles. VICKERS-ARMSTRONGS, Ltd., and LITTLE, L. F. April 20, 1938, No. 11874. [Classes 79 (i) and 79 (v)] An endless-track vehicle is steered by causing the tracks to be laid by the track-engaging wheels or rollers 11 in curved paths, the wheels being so mounted that each one is simultaneously deflected about both a horizontal and a vertical axis to curve the tracks as required. In the construction shown, the wheels 11 are swivelled for steering about inclined axes 26 to produce the desired effect. Each wheel is mounted on a member 19 connected to the chassis frame 10 by upper and lower links 20, 21 and by suspension springs 24. The connections between the links and the members 19 allow of universal movement and are so situated, as shown in Fig. 1, that the axes 26 about which the members swivel for steering are displaced with respect to the wheel centres and are inclined to the vertical, the inclination for the outer wheels being different to that for the inner wheels. The members 19 are swivelled for steering by means of transverse sliding rods 31 controlled by the steering hand wheel 27 through longitudinal sliding rods 29 and gear-boxes 30. Each gearbox 30, Fig. 3, contains pinions 34, 35 engaging a rack 38 on the rod 29, these pinions being integral with pinions 39, 40 engaging a rack 41 on the corresponding rod 31. Thus, when the rods 29 are moved longitudinally, the rods 31 are also moved to an extent depending on the ratio of the two sets of rack-and-pinion gears so as to swivel the wheels 11 to the desired extent. Balancing guide rollers 44, 47 are provided in the gear-boxes 30.
