Abstract

506,813. Cables. SIEMENS-SCHUCKERTWERKE AKT.-GES. Dec. 3, 1937, No. 33543. Convention date, Dec. 3, 1936. [Class 36] A pressure-proof and water-tight flexible covering for a submarine cable and which replaces the usual armouring or anti-pressure coverings comprises a tube 2 formed of one or more metal bands the edges 3 of which are welded together and project radially outwards in the form of a rib or ribs. The ratio of the thickness of the bands to the diameter of the tube is preferably as 1 is to 10. To prevent corrosion of the bands, which may be of steel or aluminium, the tube may be galvanically coated with lead or zinc, or provided with a pressed-on lead sheath. The spaces between the cores 1 and the tube 2 may be filled with liquid or viscous insulating material to reduce the thickness of the tube necessary to withstand the outer water pressure.
