Abstract

Steels contain 0,02-0,5 per cent of niobium, the amount being however insufficient to bind all the carbon as niobium carbide: the steels also contain up to 1 per cent of silicon together with (a) up to 1 per cent of carbon and up to 2 per cent of manganese, or (b) up to 0,6 per cent of carbon, up to 2 per cent of manganese, and 0,25-2 per cent of chromium or 0,05-1 per cent of molybdenum or both, or (c) up to 0,6 per cent of carbon, up to 1 per cent of manganese, 0,05-5 per cent of nickel, and 0,25-2 per cent of chromium or 0,05-1 per cent of molybdenum. Specific examples of such steels and of similar steels not containing niobium are given; in such examples, treatments are referred to comprising carburizing for 8 hours at 925 DEG C., 975 DEG C., 1025 DEG C.; air cooling from 900 DEG C.; quenching in water from 900 DEG C. and drawing at 150 DEG C.; air cooling from 925 DEG C.; quenching in water from 850 DEG C. and drawing at 550 DEG C.; air cooling from 875 DEG C., quenching in oil from 850-900 DEG C., and drawing in air at 150-425 DEG C.; cooling in air at 850-900 DEG C.; cooling in acetone and frozen carbon dioxide at -78 DEG C.; cooling in liquid propane cooled with liquid air at -100 DEG C.; heating for 1176 hours at 650 DEG C. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 refers also to 1,05 per cent of copper and 0,2 per cent of vanadium as constituents of specific alloys. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
