[Class 28 (i)] [Also in Group I] A sieve or straining appliance suitable for use in connection with chocolate-coating machines comprises a straining surface adapted to lie substantially horizontal, the surface being of uneven form and having a plurality of freelyopen slits or elongated apertures, located at the highest level of the surface, and through which the material being strained may freely pass. In the construction shown, an open-bottomed tray 10 is provided with parallel trough members 11 secured at their ends to the walls of the tray. The members 11 which are formed of perforated metal and have a base portion 11a and sides 11b, are spaced apart to form apertures 12, so that chocolate which does not pass through the perforated troughs may now through the apertures 12. The tray is detachably secured by catches 18 to an outer frame 16 which is constrained to reciprocate with rails 24 connected to an eccentric 30, so that a transverse shaking motion is transmitted to the sieve. In a modification the series of troughs are formed from a single piece of material. In further arrangements the troughs may be of wide V- or U-formation or of semicircular cross-section.
