473,055. Turning-gear. BOSCH AKT.- GES., R. April 8, 1936, No. 10690/37. Convention date, April 25, 1935. Divided, out of 467,621. [Class 7 (v)] An engine-starter comprises a fly-wheel 31 on the shaft 7 of an electric or other power starting device 30 having power-transmitting connections of different gear ratio with the engine shaft 6, which is rotated from the fly-wheel first at one speed and then at a higher speed by decreasing the gear ratio. As shown, the electric motor 30 drives through planetary gearing 8-10 a shaft 32 fitted with a clutch 4 movable by means of a lever 38 into engagement with a clutch member 5 on the engine shaft 6. The lever 38 is also used to bring into mesh with a gear 37 on the engine shaft a member 36 of a reduction gear 33, 34 driven from the shaft 32. In operation, the fly-wheel 31 is set in motion by the motor 30 and the gears 36, 37 are engaged, so that the engine shaft is driven slowly through the gearing 8-10, 33-37. When the engine has been given a few turns, the lever 38 is operated to disengage the gear 36 and to engage the clutch 4, 5, so that the engine shaft is turned at a higher speed ratio.
