Abstract
1471670 Starters ROBERT BOSCH GmbH 10 April 1974 [10 April 1973] 15853/74 Heading F1K An electric starter for an I.C. engine has a pinion 44 connected to an electric motor driveshaft 3 by a one-way clutch 43 and a sleeve 41 mounted on a coarse thread 40 on the drive-shaft, the sleeve 41 being moved axially into engagement with a toothed engine ring gear 54, by an electromagnet 16 having an armature rod 14 extending into the hollow end of the drive-shaft 3 and acting on a U-shape member 38 extending through a slot 36 in the shaft and having legs 39 acting on the sleeve via a spring device 55. As shown, the legs act on an axially slidable stop 61, against which act two springs 63 and 58, the opposite ends of which act respectively on a fixed brake plate 10 and a flange 42 fast with the sleeve. An electric switch 12 on the armature rod 14 is closed when the rod has moved completely to push the pinion into mesh with the ring gear. Closure of the switch starts the drive motor, so that the coarse thread 40 acting on the sleeve 41 completes the engagement of the gears. Again, Fig. 3 (not shown), compression of the return spring 63 is initiated before compression of the meshing spring 58. Also, Fig. 5 (not shown), the spring device does not rotate in the starting process.
