Abstract

470,139. Grinding. TRIGGS, W. W. (Norton Co.) Sept. 19, 1936, No. 25551. [Class 60] In a cylindrical grinding-machine means are provided for automatically increasing the rotational speed of the grinding-wheel as this wears, in order to maintain a constant peripheral speed. The machine comprises a base 10 carrying a grinding-wheel 11 belt-driven by an electric motor 14. Slidable on ways 19, 20 is a work carriage 18, movable towards and from the wheel by a screw 21, the work 25 being supported by head- and tailstocks 26 on a slide 27 movable on longitudinal ways 28, 29 on the carriage 18, so that the work may be traversed axially, either by hand, through rack gearing 30 ... 33, or automatically. The speed of the motor 14 is controlled by a rheostat 37, the arm 38 of which is moved by a chain 46 passing round a sprocket 45 rotatable on a stud 41 carried by the base 10. On the stud also is mounted a pinion 40 engaging a rack 39 on the carriage 18, the pinion 40 either being fixed to the sprocket 45 or connected thereto with lost motion by a stud 50 on the pinion movable in a cut-out portion 51 of the hub 52 of the sprocket. In operation, the carriage is advanced to the grinding position, and if the wheel has worn down, so that its peripheral speed has fallen, the pin 50 engages the end of the slot 51, thus causing rotation of the rheostat arm 38 to increase the speed of the motor 14 ; the lost motion arrangement allows withdrawal of the carriage 18, for removal &c. of the work, without alteration of the setting of the rheostat, but when the carriage is withdrawn sufficiently to allow the insertion of a new full-sized wheel, the speed of the motor is reduced correspondingly. In a modification, the wheel is movable towards and from the work, the speed controlling mechanism being operated by movement of the wheel carriage. In order to adjust the initial speed of the motor, the sprocket 45 is adjustably carried by the hub 52 mounted on the stud 41.
