Abstract

1420502 Grinding edges of lenses RAPHAEL'S Ltd 6 May 1974 [7 May 1973] 21681/73 Heading B3D A method of grinding an edge on a lens 27 comprises mounting the lens in a rotatable holder 22, bringing the lens into grinding contact with a cylindrical coarse grade grinding wheel 31 to form a flat edge on the lens, moving the lens in its holder into grinding contact with a first bevel wheel 32 of finer grade to grind a bevel edge on the lens, and then moving the lens still in its holder into grinding contact with a second bevel wheel of still finer grade for finishing the edge grinding. In a machine for carrying out the method, the lens 27 is held in a holder consisting of rubber pads 22 on shafts 21, 21<SP>1</SP> rotatable in arms 5, 5<SP>1</SP> of a holder unit 3 mounted on a pivot bar 11 on a base 1. The base has a motor 35 driving the three diamond grinding wheels 31, 32, 33. Three template guides 25 co-operate with a follower 24 on the shaft 21, and a screw thread is provided on the pivot bar to effect automatic movement of the holder unit 3, when it is raised by stubs 15, to move the unit 3 so that the lens 27 is sequentially engaged with the wheels 31, 32, 33 and the template 24 with the respective guides 25. A fourth grinding wheel (34, Fig. 5, not shown) may be provided for grinding the so-called " mini-bevel " edge on a lens.
