Abstract

<PICT:0476569/IV/1> Fibrous plant materials such as pine needles and cotton stalks are decorticated by cooking under pressure with water in a first digester 5 into which steam is introduced, then discharging the contents through a pipe 9 into a second digester of similar construction to the first at a lower pressure for the purpose of pre - wilting the materials and opening the fibres, and next digesting the opened-up materials in this second digester with hot water under pressure, with or without appropriate chemicals, for the purpose of dissolving gummy materials and in order to effect a further disintegration. The digesters are provided with a closed steam coil 6 and a perforated steam coil 7, and the first digester has also a quick-acting discharge valve 8, and a vent 11 for blowing off acids, volatile matters, &c.
