[Class 132 (iii)] A toy vehicle has bent leaf springs which drive the vehicle and which are tensioned by relative movement between the frame of the toy and a supplementary frame carried thereby. The driving wheels 20 are mounted on an axle 19 carrying a pinion 22 and journalled in the side beams 13 of the supplementary frame pivotally attached to the side walls of the vehicle body 10 by a cross-pin 16. The side beams 13 are connected by a cross-bar 14 and cross-beam 15 having mounted on them a housing 18 formed by bending a metal plate. A shaft 26 is mounted in the housing 18 and rotatably carries the hub 28 of a sector gear 27 meshing with the pinion 24 fixed with the gear 23 on the shaft 25 journalled in elongated bearings 29 in the housing 18 and having the shaft 26 as axis. A pair of bent leaf springs 31 are fixed at one end to the cross-beam 15, bear on projecting ends of the shaft 26 and are hooked at their other ends to the crosshead 30 mounted on the sector gear 27. On depressing the rear portion of the vehicle body 10 a cross-bar 35 mounted therein engages an arcuate recess 36 in the sector gear 27 which is thereby rotated counterclockwise to compress the springs 31 and move the shaft 25 to the right of the slots 29 to disengage the gear 23 from the pinion 22. When pressure on the vehicle body 10 is relaxed, the springs 31 expand to rotate the sector gear 27 clockwise and move the shaft 25 to the left of the slots 29 causing the gear 23 to engage with the pinion 22 which is thus rotated together with the driving wheels 20. The clockwise movement of the gear 27 is limited by the engagement of a finger 34 thereon with the wall 17 of the housing 18, but the clockwise movement of the pinion 22 assisted by gravity causes the shaft 25 to move to the right of the slots 29 with unmeshing of the gear 23 from the pinion 22 which thus continues to rotate. Counterclockwise movement of the sector gear 27 is limited by the cross-head 30 engaging in slots 33 in the housing 18.
