Abstract
In a process for bleaching wood pulp, e.g. ground or disintegrated wood by treatment with a hydrosulphite, the hydrosulphite is produced in the presence of the pulp to be bleached by the reaction upon one another of materials capable of producing it, e.g. zinc dust and sulphur dioxide. The hydrosulphite may be produced by the reaction of zinc dust with sodium bisulphite, or of zinc dust with sodium bisulphite and sulphurous acid. Mixtures of wood pulp with other fibrous materials may be treated, only the wood pulp being bleached in such cases.
