Abstract
A process for producing bleached pulp from cellulosic material, e.g. wood chips, grasses, straw and bagasse, comprises producing an alkaline liquor containing sodium carbonate and sodium sulphide, treating at least a part of the alkaline liquor to remove part of the sodium carbonate and/or to convert at least part of the sodium carbonate to sodium hydroxide by causticization to provide an aqueous solution rich in sodium sulphide and/or an aqueous solution containing sodium sulphide and sodium hydroxide, using at least a part of either of these latter aqueous solutions for the cooking of cellulosic material to produce a pulp, producing sodium sulphate, chlorine and chlorine dioxide from sulphuric acid, sodium chloride and sodium chlorate, using the chlorine and chlorine dioxide in a multistage bleaching of the pulp, using at least a part of at least one of the alkaline liquor, the aqueous solution containing sodium sulphide and sodium hydroxide and the aqueous solution rich in sodium sulphide, for extracting the partially bleached pulp from an earlier stage in the multi-stage bleaching process, and using the sodium sulphate together with the used liquor from the cooking of the cellulosic material for producing the alkaline liquor. The sodium chlorate may be produced by the electrolysis of an aqueous solution containing sodium chloride.
