Abstract
<PICT:0448818/III/1> <PICT:0448818/III/2> In a machine for coating flexible sheets with stripes of colour, gum, &c., the sheets are fed from a pile and are carried through coating rollers, which may act on one or both sides of the sheet, by conveying means which do not comprise grippers and which are arranged to prevent angular displacement of the sheets during their travel. The sheets are propelled through the coating rollers 34, 35 by the friction of the rollers which are preferably rubber covered. The sheets are fed from a pile 11 by means of reciprocating pneumatic separators 16, and the separation is assisted by a work-holder 14, air blast devices 15, and adjustably mounted rollers 18 prevent buckling of the top sheet. The sheets are carried to the coating rollers 34, 35 by means of a conveyer 20 of a length less than that of the sheet, the conveyer being formed of belts 30 passing over a roller 27 and over pulleys 28. A pair of rollers 21 carried by adjustable arms 23 coact with the roller 27 to control the direction of travel of the sheets, and these may be set to cause the stripes to be arranged parallel to or at an angle to the edges of the sheets. The undersides of the sheets are coated or printed by rollers 34 receiving gum, or colour from a fountain roller 32 fitted with a regulating roller 33. The upper side of the sheet may be coated by the roller 35 receiving its supply from the roller 34 at the intervals between the passage of successive sheets. Distributing rollers 36 which may be oscillated are fitted to the roller 35. In a modification in which only one side of the sheet is coated, a sheet is fed once for each revolution of the roller 35, and receives its coating from the major portion of the roller 35. A stripper 26 directs the coated sheet to a conveyer 40 which directs it through a drying-device comprising adjustably mounted heaters 41, and adjustable heat retainers and deflectors 42 arranged at the sides and extending above the conveyer belts 40.
