Abstract

Solids are separated from the residues obtained in the destructive hydrogenation of carbonaceous materials by adding thereto aliphatic hydrocarbons rich in hydrogen and boiling below 50 DEG C., in small proportions up to 20 per cent so that substantially all the solids, but only part of the asphalts, contained in the residues are precipitated. Preferably liquefied hydrocarbons are used, e.g. liquefied propane or butane. The asphalts remaining in the oil may be converted into valuable products by further destructive hydrogenation or they may be precipitated in known manner by the addition of liquefied hydrocarbons. 100 parts of an oil obtained by centrifuging destructive hydrogenation residues and containing 11,3 per cent asphalt and 10 per cent solids are mixed at 90 DEG C. with 10 parts of commercial butane. 67 parts of oil free from solids are obtained while the residue contains 20 per cent of solids and 20 per cent of the asphalt contained in the original material. The treatment may be repeated to obtain further precipitation of solids. Specification 409,278 is referred to.
