[Class 94 (i)] [See also Group VI] In an arrangement for spreading the tobacco showered to a moving tobacco - receiving surface 3, in a tobacco - packing or cigarette - making machine, the shower is subdivided into widths extending lengthwise of the moving surface and the tobacco of each subdivision is given a horizontal movement or a horizontal component of movement and also a lateral movement transverse to the direction of movement of the moving surface. The position at which the horizontal movement is given to the tobacco is at a sufficient height above the moving surface to spread the tobacco of each subdivision lengthwise of the surface to a width 7, greater than the original width 8 of the subdivision so that, due to the lateral movement, the heavier tobacco particles 10 of one subdivision are mixed with the lighter particles 9 of the adjacent subdivision as indicated in plan in Fig. 4. In the arrangement shown, tobacco is showered from a distributer roller 1 by a picker roller 2 on to a moving surface 3, which may be an endless moving band or a web of cigarette paper to be formed into a continuous rod. The shower is subdivided by inclined plates or vanes 5, the lower ends of which are bent forwardly to give the subdivided portions of tobacco a horizontal component of movement and are also set askew to the direction of movement of the surface 3 as indicated in Fig. 3. The plates or vanes 5 may be of semicircular or trough-like section. The surface 3 may move in a direction opposite to that indicated by the arrow B, Fig. 1, so that the tobacco is given a component of movement in a direction opposite to the direction of movement of the surface 3.
