Abstract
402,406. Bringing seaplanes on board aircraft carriers. BOUR, E. F., Forest-side, Mauritius. May 26, 1932, No. 14936. [Class 115.] In a device for bringing seaplanes on board aircraft carriers in which a trackway 14 trailed at the stern is tensioned by a resistance device 15, this tension is graduated by adjusting the inclination of a drag blade 36, Fig. 6, hinged at the rear of the resistance device. This is achieved by the hydraulic cylinders connected to the drag blade and mounted either directly on the resistance device or on the ship. In either case the inclination of the drag blade is determined by the setting of a spring controlled valve 41, Fig. 10, interposed in the feed-pipe of the pump operating the hydraulic cylinders, the setting of the valve thus determining the pressure in the cylinders and hence the position of the pistons and through the rope connection 14b the inclination of the drag blade. When mounted on board ship the hydraulic cylinders control the position of a sliding platform 7 carrying the winches on which the ropes connected to the drag blade are wound. A separate roller 4 is provided around which the trackway 13 is wound when inboard. The trackway comprises metal sheets 17, 17a, 17c connected to transverse cross-bars. Alternatively the overlapping ends of transverse sheets are rivetted together. The resistance device may carry buoyancy members.
