Abstract

407,742. Grinding. TALBOT, Ltd., C., and TRENDELL, F. W. Barlby Road, Ladbroke Grove, London. Sept. 29, 1932, No. 27082. [Class 60.] Apparatus for surfacing the edges of slots by means of abrading blocks working alternately or successively along their opposite edges comprises in one form shown for working on a universal joint part having a shank with internal splines a tool spindle 6 reciprocated by a lever 16 rocked about a pivot 17 by a crank disc driven by the shaft 10 and fitted at its lower end with a shank 36 carrying a ring of abrading blocks 49 mounted in holders 46 retained in radial slots in the shank by garter springs 48 and a chuck 28 which is oscillated in the interval between each up and down movement of the tool spindle by means of an arm 27 engaging between spring buffers 34 on a fork 33 carried by the chuck so that opposite edges of the slots in the work piece are abraded during the up and down strokes. The vertical shaft 23 carrying the arm 27 is oscillated by means of a cam, Fig. 4, formed of two laterally spaced sectors 13, 14 with oppositely bevelled edges 21 engaging alternately with a roller 26 on an arm 25 projecting from the shaft 23 and the amplitude of the oscillation is adjusted by means of a cone 30 threading on a stud 29 fixed to the chuck 28 and coacting with adjustable set screws 32.
