Abstract

406,442. Air-intake silencers. AMAL, Ltd., and BROWN, C., Holford Drive, Perry Barr, Birmingham. Dec. 2,1932, Nos. 34129/32 and 32742/33. [Class 7 (ii).] An air-intake silencer comprises a non- metallic sound absorbing or deadening tube reinforced internally or externally or both by perforated metal or by a metal helix but not by non-perforated metal. A fibre &c. tube 2 is supported externally by a perforated metal sheet 4 and internally by a spiral spring 5, the air passing axially through it to the carburetter, or a perforated metal sheet may be disposed between two coaxial fibre tubes As shown in Fig. 4, air, entering by an aperture 15 in a cap 13, passes along an inner fibre tube 20 supported by a longer metal gauze tube 21, the ends of which are engaged by flanges 23 on the cap 13 and a closed cap 14, and then traverses in the opposite direction an outer fibre &c. tube supported by spring bands 12 in an outer casing 10, the air finally leaving by a radial port 18 adapted to be secured to a downdraught carburetter. The inner tube 20 may be concentric with the casing 10 as shown or be inclined thereto. The port 18 may be placed at the opposite end of the casing, the end near the inlet 15 being packed with glass wool or rubberized bristles from pigs.
