Abstract
371,001. Cellulose. DREYFUS, H., 22, Hanover Square, London. Nov. 11, 1930, No. 33966. [Class 96.] In a process for the manufacture of cellulose or cellulosic materials from wood, straw, grass or the like wherein the raw material is subjected to the action of hot acid liquors under pressure, the pressure is produced by means or with the aid of volatile organic liquids. Additional pressure may be produced by other means, e.g. by pumping inert gases or vapours into the digester, or by their development from materials introduced into the digester for that purpose. Examples of suitable volatile organic liquids are ether and low boiling point hydrocarbons such as petroleum ether. The temperatures em. ployed are lower than usual, e.g. 100-120‹ C., and the pressures higher than usual, e.g. 20 100 atmospheres. In an example wood chips are subjected to vacuum and impregnated with 10-20 times their weight of a sulphite cooking liquid containing 3-4 per cent total SO2 of which about 1.8-2.8 per cent is free and about 1.2 per cent is combined. 10-35 per cent of the weight of the wood in petroleum ether is added, the digester closed, and nitrogen pumped in until the pressure is 15-25 atmospheres. After 1-2 hours the temperature is raised to 110-120‹ C. and maintained at that temperature for 16-24 hours. Specification 371,038 is referred to. According to the Provisional Specification the increased pressure may be produced by the use of inert gases or vapours alone.
