Abstract
Tungsten carbide powder for use in making electrodes is made either by heating a mixture of powdered tungsten and lamp black in a graphite container to from 1200-1400 DEG C. for a period of from one-half to one hour in a carbon resistance or other high temperature furnace and then rapidly cooling the container in a reducing atmosphere, or by passing carbon monoxide through tungsten powder in an enclosed tube furnace.ALSO:An electrode for spot or butt welding, or for use as a current collector in electric traction systems or as a contact for switches, consists of a body of preformed tungsten carbide saturated with copper. Tungsten carbide powder is mixed with a binder consisting of a metal of the chromium group, such as molybdenum or tungsten, or with copper, and is compressed in dies to form the electrodes, which are then submerged in molten copper, preferably in a hydrogen furnace after first preheating the electrode. Prior to submerging in copper, it may be sintered in a hydrogen or other reducing atmosphere.
