Abstract
358,179. Straighttube heat exchangers. WHITE, A. E., 5, Quality Court, Chancery Lane, London.-(Shaw - Perkins Manufacturing Co.; Oliver Building, Pittsburg, U.S.A.) July 29, 1930, No. 22873. [Class 64 (iii).] A tubular heat exchanger particularly intended for preheating air by hot waste gases comprises a number of units 7, Fig. 1, so supported upon rails 12, Fig. 4, in a framework 1, that the units may be removed laterally, the rails at one end of the framework being fixed and the rails at the other end being free to allow longitudinal expansion of the units. The tubes 8 of each unit are welded to pan-shaped headers 9 having outwardly-flanged edges which engage with rails 12 carried by vertical angle-irons 11 on each side of the air inlet and outlet openings of the preheater. Short sections of rails 15 are arranged vertically on each side of the headers for locking the units in position. The headers when in position are secured to the rails by clamps 16. To allow for expansion of the units, the angle-irons at one end of the preheater may be allowed to slide freely in the framework. In a modification, the headers at one end of the preheater are supported by rails 12a, Fig. 9, carried on an end frame 26 spaced from the flanges 28 of the main frame and connected thereto by flexible gas-tight joints. The joints are made by vertical and horizontal strips 31 held between pressed-out plates 34 mounted to rotate in semicylindrical grooves in blocks 36 secured to the end frame. The inner end of the strips engage freely in slots in cylindrical rods 32 held in grooves on the main frame.
