Pile-fabric looms; tuft-cutting mechanism.- The row of pile yarns delivered by the spool and tube carrier device d are cut off to the required length by blades a, f to one or both of which facial spring pressure is applied at spaced intermediate points in the width of the loom. The apparatus shown as applied to a Royal Axminster carpet loom comprises an inner cutter blade a on a block b on cam-actuated levers c, and an outer blade made in sections f attached to blocks g supported end to end by screwed studs q from a block h, upwardly-projecting slides t fitting slots u in the block h preventing transverse rocking of the cutter blade sections f and pressure springs r applied to each section causing independent but flexible and uniform shearing action. The various sections may be arranged in stepped formation and in oblique or angular relation to the complementary blade. The block h may have terminal slides i moving in guides j and be actuated by means of pins n, links m and camactuated levers l. Fingers o on the sections f may co-operate with inclines p on the blade a, whereby the blades are guided into correct shearing relation. The studs q may be arranged to set the sections f at different levels as shown in Fig. 3. The outer blade instead of being sectional may be in one continuous length but provided with several springs. It may operate under instead of over the blade a. The spring loaded sections may operate with a pivotal or scissors action.
