Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDRE VELUARD, citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pile-Cutting Mechanism for Looms, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My lnvention relates to improvements in pile or float cuttin mechanism for looms for weaving fabric w erein the pile or floats thereof are formed over wires which extend in the direction of the warp and which direct the pile or floats to the cutting devices, and wherein the cutting devices are actuated by a common bar.
The object of'my invention is to improve: first, the mechanism for supporting and actuatin the bar which actuates the cutting devlces; second, the means for connecting the several cutting devices to the common actuating bar therefor to permit the individual removal of any of the cutting devices without disturbing the means which holds the other devices in proper relation to the bar; and, third, the form of the knives, whereby they may engage other parts of the devices to eflectually sharpen their cutting edges during the operation of the loom.
With the above and related objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating my invention,
Figure 1 is a vertical section of parts of a loom provided with a pile or float cutting mechanism embodying my invention.

Referrin to the drawings, 2 designates the loo-m f i-ame, 4 the breast beam, 5 the take-up roller for the Woven fabric, and 8 the lay. Each end portion of the lay 8 is connected by a bar 9 to a crank 10 formed on a shaft 11 which is journaled in bearings on the loom frame 2 and which is adapted to be rotated to actuate the lay 8.
The Warp threads 12 are raised and lowered by the loom harness 13, and the woven fabric 14 is wound upon the take-up roller 5, durin the weaving operation.
The pile wires 15 extend in the direction of the Warp 12 and have their forward ends connected to the pile or float cutting devices which will be hereinafter described. The rearward ends of the wires 15 pass over a bar 16 and extend downwardly therefrom, each having a weight 17 attached to the lower end thereof to keep it taut and to take up the slack when it is raised and lowered by the harness 13, during the weaving operation.
The parts thus far described are common and well known to persons skilled in this art. and no detailed description or illustration thereof is deemed necessary herein.
Each pile wire 15 of the loo-m is connected to a pile or float cutting device which I shall now describe.
1-8 designates the body portion of the device, constituting the support for the other elements thereof and being preferably formed of sheet metal bent to form a downwardly facing top groove 19 and an upwardly facing bottom groove 20. The walls of the grooves 19 and 20 are connected at one side of the device by a side wall 21. Projecting rearwardly from the bottom of one end of the body portion 18 is a slender arm 22, the rearward end of which is connected the forward end of a pile wire 15. This arm 22 forms, in effect, a continuation of the wire 15, and it is adapted to receive the pile or floats formed over the .wire as rapidly as the fabric is produced and advanced by the loom.
The body portion 18 of each cutting de vice extends over a bar 23 which is secured on the breast beam 4; and extending forwardly from the body portion 18 is an arm 24 which rests upon a bar 25. The bar 25 is secured upon a bar 26, The bars 25 and 26 extend parallel to the bar 23 and breast beam 4, and the bar 26 is secured to brackets 27 which are secured on and rise from the breast beam 4 and which will be hereinafter referred to. The arm 24 is formed of sheet metal and its rearward end is suitably secured within the grooves 19 and 20 of the body portion 18 by indenting the body portion, at 28, as shown. The forward end of the arm 24 has a downwardly extending vertical ortion 29 which is seated within one of a series of vertical grooves 30 in the forward face of the bar 25; and the vertical portion 29 has a projection 31 which extends rearwardly beneath an overhanging portion of the bar 25. Thus the arm 24 embraces the forward ortion of the bar 25 which prevents vertical displacement of the arm. Displacement of each vertical portion 29 from its groove 30 is prevented by a locking member 32 which is inserted into an opening in and is removable from the arm 24 and which extends downwardly therefrom into one of a series of grooves formed in the rearward face of the bar 25. The locking member 32 is preferably formed of sheet metal and it is made tapered or wedgeshaped, as shown, to cause it to bind against the walls of the opening in the arm 24 and against the bar 25 when it is inserted into the arm 24. The opening in the arm 24 is preferably formed by cuttm horizontal slits 34 therein and displacing tie parts of the arm 24 above and below the slits 34 laterally on the respective sides of the arm 24 so as to form a passage for the reception of the member 32 in the same vertical plane with the arm 24. The walls of the grooves 30 and 33, engaging the parts 29 and 32, respectively, maintain the cutting devices in vertical position and in proper spaced relation to each other laterally; and longitudinal dislplacement of the cutting devices is prevented y the engagement of the parts 29 and 32 with the bar 25. By withdrawing its locking member 32 from the opening 1n its arm 24 any one of the cutting devices may be readil removed from the loom. Each cutting evice is rovided with a plate-like member 35 whic extends into and between the grooves 19 and 20 and which is fitted to slide longitudinally therein. The member 35 is provided with an arm 36 which extends rearwardly adjacent to the wall 21 of the body portion 18: and arranged between the we] 21 and arm 36 is a plate-like knife 37 mounted to turn on a pivot pin or stud 38 which projects fixedly from the arm 36. When it is desired to remove the knife 37, the arm 36 is sprung outwardly from the wall 21 to withdraw the stud 38 from the opening in the knife 37. The free end of the stud 38 extends beyond the knife 37 and enters a. slot in the wall 21 to prevent any accidental springing of the parts from withdrawin the stud 38 from the opening in the knife The lower portion of the knife 37 is provided with a cutting edge 39 which follows a curved line. concentric with the pivot stud 38; and the upper portion of the knife 37 is provided with a slot 40 which receives a transversely extcmling pin or projection --l-1 on the side wall 21 of the support 18. When the member 35 is rcci 'n-ocatcd on the support 18, the knife 37 will be bodily carried by the member 35, and the engagement of the walls of the slot 40 with the pin 41 will cause the knife 37 to be oscillated back and forth to effect the cutting operation.
The wall 21 forming one side of the bottom groove 20 has a knife sharpenin edge 42 which is inclined upwardly an forwardly from the top of the pile or float re ceiving arm 22, as clearly shown in the drawings. The cutting edge 42 of the knife is beveled toward the sharpening edge 30, and it is pressed into engagement therewith. by a spring arm 43 which projects from the member 35 and bears against one side of the knife 37. When the knife 37 is actuated, as hercinbeforc described, its cutting edge 39 will be automaticall sharpened by its engagement with the-s iarpening edge 42 in a scissors-like action. The body of the knife 37 between its cutting ed e 39 and pivot 38 is made concave to hol the body of the knife 37 adjacent to its cutting edge 39 out of contact with the wall 21 and to permit the springv 43 to press the cutting edge 39 firmly against the wall 21 and its sharpening edge 42, and thus increase the effectiveness of the sharpening operation.
The pile or floats to be out are formed over the wires 15 and advanced along the same to and along [he arms 22 of the cutting devices where they are cut by the oscillatin knives 37 and as the fabric 14 is produce by the loom, it is advanced over the bar 23 and breast beam 4 and down to and around guide rollers 44 and 45 to the take-up roller 5, thereby drawing the pile or floats to and advancing them from the knives 37.
I shall now describe the mechanism for reciprocating the members 35-of the cutting devices for the actuation of the knives 37.
The upper portion of each member 35 has a notch 46 cut therein for the reception of a stepped flange 47 projecting downwardly from a bar 48 which extends over the cutting devices parallel to the breast beam 4. The ends of the bar 48 are seated on lugs 49 projecting inwardly from the short arms 50 of levers 51 which are fulcrumed, at 52, on the brackets 27 previously referred to. The bar 48 is secured to the levers 51 by screws 53 screwed into the lugs 49 and engaging the stepped flange 47 of the bar. The upper ends of the long arms54 of the levers 51 have openings 55 iornaed therein which re;
ceive the laterally and inwardly projecting ends of the short arms 56 of levers 67 which are fulcrumed, at 58, on the brackets 27 out Wardly thereof.
The levers 51 are located inwardly of the brackets 27 and the lever arms 56 extend over the tops of the brackets 27 and enter the openings 55. The lever arms 5.4 are provided with adjustable screws 57 on the respective sides of their openings 55 and between which the lever arms 56 extend, whereby when the levers 67 are rocked, their arms 56 will en age the screws 57 and rock the levers 51 an thereby reciprocate the bar 48 toward and from the lay 8, causing the rib 47 on the bar 48 to bodily reciprocate the members 35 of the cutting devices and the consequent actuation of the knives 37.
The lower ends of the long arms 59 of the levers 57 are pivoted to the orward ends of links 60 which have their rearward ends pivoted to brackets 61 secured to and projecting from the lay 8, whereby, when the lay 8 is reciprocated, during the weaving operation, the levers 67 will be rocked back and forth, causing the actuation of the knives 37, as hereinbefore explained.
The engagement of the short arms 56 of the levers 67 with parts carried by the long arms 54 of the levers 51 enables me to utilize the reciprocative action of the lay 8 for the reciprocation of the knife actuating members 35, even though the movement of the members 35 is much less than that of the lay 8.
To prevent the levers 51 from accidentally swinging too far for the proper actuation of the knives 37, I provide the brackets 27 with lugs carrying adjustable stop screws 62 which are located on the respective sides of the lever arms 50 and which are adapted to be engaged to limit the movement thereof.
In order that the length of the links 60 may be varied for purposes of adjustment, I form each link of two end members 63 connected by a screw-threaded bar 64 which is screwed into the members 63 and which is provided with set nuts 65 to engage the members 63 and lock them in different positions of adjustment. By detaching the links 60 and loosening the nuts 65, the members 63 may be turned on the bar 64 and thereby adjusted toward or from each other to shorten or lengthen the links, as desired.
I claim 1. Ina loom for weaving pile fabrics, the combination of a loom frame, fabric weaving devices, pile cutting devices, brackets secured to the frame, levers fulcrumed on the brackets, each lever having a long arm and a short arm, an actuating bar for the cutting devices carried by the short arms of said levers, supplemental levers fulcrumed on the brackets and having long arms and short arms,- the short-arms of time supplemental levers engaging the long arms of the first named levers, whereby when the supplemental levers are rocked the first named levers will be rocked thereby, and means operative to rock the supplemental levers.
2. In a loom for weaving pile fabrics, the combination of a loom frame, fabric weaving devices including a lay and means operative to actuate the 'lay, pile cutting devices, brackets secured to the frame, levers fulcrumed on the brackets, each lever having a long arm and a short arm, an actuating bar for the cutting devices carried by the short arms of said levers, supplemental levers fulcrumed on the brackets and having long arms and short arms, the short arms of the supplemental levers engaging the long arms of the first named levers, whereby. when the supplemental levers are rocked the first named lovers will be rocked thereby, and connections between the long arms of the supplemental levers and the lay, whereby when the lay is actuated the supplemental levers will be rocked.

In a loom forweaving combination of a loom frame a bar supported by the frame, a pile cutting device having a body portion extendihg over said bar and provided with a downwardly extending part engaging one face of said bar, said part having a projection extending beneath said bar, and a member engaged with and removable from said body portion and engaging the face of said bar opposite the face engaged by said part.
4. In a loom for weaving pile fabrics, the combination of a loom frame, a bar supported by the frame and having grooves in opposite faces thereof, a pile cutting device having a body portion extending over said bar and provided with a downwardly extending part seated in a groove in one face of said bar, and a member engaged with and removable from said body portion and extending into a groove in the opposite face of said bar.

In a loom for weaving pile fabrics, the combination of a loom frame, a bar supported by the frame and having grooves 1n opposite faces thereof, a pile cuttlng device having a body portion extending over said bar and provided with a downwardly extending part seated in a groove in one face of said bar, said part having a projection extending beneath said bar, and a member engaged with and removable from said body portion and extending into a groove in the opposite face of said bar.
6. In a loom for weaving pile fabrics, the combination of a loom frame, a bar supported by the frame, a pile cutting device having a body portion formed of sheet metal extending over said bar and provided with a downwardly extending art engaging one face of said bar, said ha y portion having pile fabrics, the
slits formed therein and having arts above and below said slits displaced laterally forming a passage extending vertically through said elite, and a member extending through said passage and engaged with an removable from said body portion and enaging the face of said bar opposite to the ace engaged by said part.
7. In a loom for weaving pile fabrics, the combination of a loom frame, a bar sup ported by the frame, a pile cutting device having a body portion extending over said bar and provided with a downwardl extending part engaging one face of said bar, said part having a projection extending beneath said bar, and a ta ered member engaged with and removab e from said body portion and engaging the face of said bar opposite the face engaged b said part.
8. In a pile fabric cutting eviee, the combination of a support, a knife movable on the support and having a concave body portion provided with a cutting edge to effect the cutting operation, said support having a part adapted to receive the pile and direct it to the cutting edge of the knife, said support having a part adapted to be engaged b the cutting edge of the knife to sharpen tii e same when it is moved on the support, the concave portion of the knife maintainin the body thereof out of contact with said part, and means operative to move the knife.
9. In a pile fabric cutting device, the com bination of a support, a knife movable on the support and having a concave body portion provided with a cutting edge to effect the cutting operation, said support having a part adapted to receive the lie and direct it to the cutting edge of t e knife, said support having a part adapted to be engaged by the cutting edge of the knife to sharpen the same when' it is moved on the support, the concave portion of the knife maintaining the body thereof out of contact with said part, a spring pressing the cutting edge of the knife against said art, and means operative to move the knif e In testimony whereof, I have hereunto affixed my signature this 27th day of February A.
