Abstract

303,996. Alloy Welding Processes, Ltd., and Jones, E. H. Dec. 13, 1927. Uniting by fusion.-The coating of a metallic arc welding electrode is provided with a film impermeable to moisture so as to prevent hygroscopic action on the ingredients thereof, the film being formed by dipping the coated electrode in a varnish or lacquer having a cellulose base, such as cellulose acetate or nitrocellulose dissolved in amyl acetate &c. and by mixing the lacquer with the ingredients of the coating, prior to application to the core. Such lacquer is that sold under the registered Trade Mark " Hucol." The film may also be obtained by dipping the coated electrode in a solution having a carbonaceous base such as a solution of 1 part of shellac in 3 parts of methylated spirits or a solution of equal parts of gold size and spirit varnish. The spirit varnish may consist of 10 parts sandarac, 3 parts resin, and 70 parts of methylated spirits or of 28 grams gum mastic, 56 grams of gum juniper, 7 grams of turpentine and 570 c.cs. of alcohol. In the case of aluminium or aluminium alloy electrodes the film may also be produced by mixing the ingredients of the coating with a solution having a carbonaceous base. An electrode in which the core is first spirally wound with asbestos as described in Specification 127,315. is then coated with the film by dipping and after the flux coating has been extruded thereon, is again dipped in the solution. The first film is for the purpose of preventing chemical action between the flux and the asbestos and core and the second for excluding atmospheric moisture. The core may be of aluminium or aluminium alloy with a coating as described in Specification 285,674, or may consist of steel with a coating comprising equal parts of fluorspar, felspar, calcium carbonate or hydroxide or of copper, brass or bronze with a coating comprising equal parts of fluorspar, silica, borax glass, borax and sodium carbonate. The coating may contain powdered metals and alloys for alloying with the core material.
