Abstract

298,178. Vickers, Ltd., and Lucas, O. D. July 5, 1927. Fibres, treating. - In the production of fibres resembling silk from flax and similar materials, the scutched fibre, which may be previously retted, is treated with a cellulose solvent of such strength as to exert a selective dissolving and hydrolyzing action without actually dissolving or gelatinizing the fibre. A suitable solvent is cuprammonium containing 10 grams of copper in the litre dissolved in 880 ammonia solution diluted with an equal volume of water, the fibre being immersed in this solution for 5-10 minutes. Another suitable solvent consists of zinc chloride 50-60 parts in 50-40 parts of water. The treatment is preceded in the case of retted flax by boiling for 1 hour in a 5 per cent solution of caustic soda and followed after washing by boiling with 1 per cent caustic soda to which is added after the first half hour a plasticizer which may be a sulphonated fatty acid such as sulphonated castor oil or an alkyl sulphonamide of a similar fatty acid containing “-¢ its weight of linseed oil or other partly-saponifiable oil. Where unretted flax is used, a boiling in 1 per cent caustic soda solution, washing, acid bath treatment and washing precedes the boiling with 5 per cent caustic soda. Treatment with carbon bisulphide may be interposed between the 5 per cent and 1 per cent caustic soda treatments.
