Making slabs.-In apparatus for preparing a wet mixture of fibre and cement, more particularly asbestos cement, for feeding to a machine for producing sheets &c., the dry material, after a preliminary mixing, is fed to a breaker together with a stream of water, the wet mixture being then delivered to a head box together with more water obtained from the backwater of a forming machine to which the wet mixture is supplied; the backwater is fed to a clarifying device, the non-clarified water being used for adding to the dry material before it enters the breaker. The dry material is placed in a rotatable drum 1 having a hinged door 2 and inwardly-projecting teeth 6. After mixing, the material is discharged into a shoot 10 the lower end of which is widened to prevent clogging, and the material is fed to the breaker 14 by a worm 11 driven by a variablespeed gear 12; water is supplied by a pipe 35, while broken portions of sheet cement are supplied from a table 19. From the breaker the mixture passes to a head box 20 where more water is added by a pump 30 through a pipe 21 fitted with a control valve 23<a> and a baffle 22. The head box discharges through launders 23, 24 to vats. The backwater from the formers is led to the pump 30; part is discharged to the head box, and the rest is led by a pipe 25a to a launder 26a and thence to an inner cone 25 within a conical settling vessel 26. The clear water is led by a pipe 31 to the forming machine while the sediment is discharged by the pipe 35 to the breaker. The level of water in the vessel 26 is maintained by a ball cock supply 29.
