Abstract

276,737. Cowburn, F. C., and Godfrey, E. L. June 2, 1926. Turning.-A device for grinding, machining, or otherwise treating conical surfaces such as the rollers and bearing surfaces of conical roller bearings, or epicyclic gearing of the friction roller type, comprises a pair of pivoted setting-arms c which coact with a conical member d and distance-gauges, so that the surfaces of all the bearing elements may be made to converge to a common apex by linear gauge adjustments without direct computation of the conicities of the bearing elements. The work l, which in Fig. 1 constitutes the inner bearing member, is carried in a chuck b and is ground by a grinding-wheel k mounted on a compound slide h. i, which is guided on one of the arms c. The angularity of the arms may be symmetrically varied by means of a hand-wheel e<1> which traverses the cam member d engaging roller abutments on the arms. The arms c may be calibrated as at p, q, and different linear gauges may be inserted between these points, first for treating a conical roller, then for treating the inner bearing element and finally for treating the outer bearing element. For the latter operation the grinding-wheel is arranged as indicated in Fig. 2. The work is correctly located in relation to the point C<1> by means of a setting-surface on the machine. The machine may also be provided with a tool adapted to finish the surface o, carrying conical rollers m, and a cutting tool may be substituted for a grinding-wheel. The members c may be capable of parallel adjustment for finishing cylindrical surfaces.
