Abstract

Apparatus for securing and tensioning webbing straps 40 surrounding gas cylinders (31, Figure 3) loaded on a pallet 20 or the like. The apparatus comprises a ratchet operated jack and a webbing clamp 51. The webbing clamp 51 comprises a latch 54 which secures the webbing 40 when the latch 54 is closed and which allows the webbing 40 to run freely when the latch 54 is open. Preferably there may be two sections of fabric strap webbing 40 located around the cylinders (31) at the top and bottom of a cylinder bundle (30, Figure 3). The webbing clamps 51 may be the type commonly used for aircraft seatbelts, such clamps increase the clamping force con webbing 40 as the tension in the webbing increases. The ratchet mechanism is optionally attached to a removable handle 52 which may insert into a socket 53 in use to allow the operator to operate the ratchet.

Description

Cylinder Pallet Strap Tensioner The present invention relates to a strap tensioner system. In particular, the present invention relates to a strap tensioner system for pallet mounted gas cylinder bundles.
It is well known in the industrial gases sector to position multiple gas cylinders onto a pallet for transportation and use. An example prior art pallet holding a plurality of gas cylinders is show in Figure 1. As can be seen in Figure 1, the pallet 1 comprises a base 6 and sides 7 made up of rectangular hollow steel sections. The base 6 of the pallet 1 further comprises a sheet steel load plate 5 upon which a plurality of cylinders 2 are located to form a cylinder bundle 8. In an alternative example (see Figure 2) the load plate 5 may comprise steel wire mesh.
In order to prevent the cylinders 2 from falling off the pallet 1 during transportation or use, a steel chain 3 has historically been employed to hold the cylinders 2 in the cylinder bundle 8 tightly together. The chain 3 is passed around the cylinder bundle 8 and tensioned by means of a load binder 4.
Load binders are well know in the art and are therefore not described in detail here.
A problem with the prior art system shown in Figure 1 is that, with use, the load binder 4 can become damaged or worn in which case, when released, it does so suddenly and with the stored energy of the tension in the chain. Such sudden release is a hazard to operators and can result in broken skin or digits requiring hospital attention. Another problem with chain tensioner systems is that the chain can damage the exterior surface of the cylinders 2, particularly if made form aluminium.
In order to address some of the above mentioned problems, it has become common in the industry to replace the steel chain 3 with webbing straps. A prior art pallet holding a cylinder bundle secured with webbing straps is shown in Figure 2. For clarity, like items are designated by like reference numerals. In this case, the cylinders 2 of the cylinder bundle 8 are secured together by fabric webbing straps 9 located substantially at the top and bottom off the cylinder bundle 8. The ends of the webbing straps 9 are fastened together, and the webbing tensioned, by webbing ratchet fasteners 10. Such webbing ratchet fasteners are well known in the field of haulage and are therefore not described in detail here.
Webbing ratchet fasteners 10 of the type used in the prior art are designed for use in tensioning webbing straps located in the vertical plane, such as webbing straps used to secure tarpaulins over loads on the back of trucks or lorries. Such webbing ratchet fasteners are not suited for use in the horizontal plane as shown in Figure 2. In addition, overtime, as the webbing becomes softer, the webbing tends to jam between the tensioner drum and the body housing the components of the webbing ratchet fastener. When jammed, the webbing must be cut to release the jam. This adds time and cost to the loading and unloading of the pallets.
The present invention provides an apparatus for securing and tensioning webbing straps surrounding a plurality of gas cylinders, the apparatus comprising a ratchet operated jack and at least one webbing clamp, wherein the at least one webbing clamp comprises a latch which secures the webbing when the latch is closed, and which allows the webbing to run freely when the latch is open.
The apparatus of the present invention is advantageous as the webbing straps can be hand tightened by leaving the latches of the webbing clamps open, before being fully tightened and tensioned by means of the jack.
This reduces wear and tear on the jack as it need only be operated to tightened and tension the webbing. In addition, the ability to open the latches to release the webbing prevents the need to cut the webbing in the event of a jam.
In another aspect, the present invention provides an apparatus for securing and tensioning webbing straps surrounding a plurality of gas cylinders, the apparatus comprising at least one webbing strap and at least one apparatus as described above.
In a further aspect, the present invention provides a kit of parts for an apparatus as described above, the kit comprising at least one webbing strap and at least one apparatus as described above.
An example of the present invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying Figures in which: Figure 1 shows a prior art cylinder bundle chain tensioner system; Figure 2 shows a prior art cylinder bundle strap tensioner system; Figure 3 shows a cylinder bundle strap tensioner system according to the present invention; and Figure 4 shows a cylinder bundle strap tensioner according to the present invention.
Figure 3 shows a pallet 20 comprising a base 22 and sides 21 constructed from rectangular hollow steel. The base 22 of the pallet 20 comprises a steel mesh load plate 23 upon which a cylinder bundle 30 rests in use. The cylinder bundle comprises a plurality of gas cylinders 31. To prevent the gas cylinders 31 from falling from the pallet 20 during transportation or use, two sections of fabric strap webbing 40 are located around the cylinders at substantially the top and bottom of the cylinder bundle 30. Optionally, more or less sections of webbing 40 may be used.
The webbing straps 40 are fastened and tensioned by means of strap tensioners 50 as described in greater detail with reference to Figure 4.
The strap tensioners 50 comprise a pair of webbing clamps 51 and a ratchet operated push-pull jack. The webbing clamps 51 are of the type commonly used for aircraft seatbelts, whereby the clamps 51 comprise a latch 54 which clamps the webbing 40 when in the closed position, as shown, and allows the webbing 40 to run freely when in the open position (not shown).
Such clamps operate so that the clamping force exerted on the webbing 40 in use increases as the tension in the webbing 40 increases.. It will be understood by the person skilled in the art that the size and material of the webbing clamps 51 must be selected so that the webbing clamps 51 are able to withstand the loads and operational environments likely to be experienced when in use with cylinder bundles.
The ratchet mechanism is attached to a removable handle 52 which connects to a socket 53 in use to allow the operator to operate the ratchet to tighten the webbing 40 around the cylinders 31.
In use, the webbing 40 is initially hand tightened around the cylinders 31 by opening the latches 54 of the webbing clamps 51 and pulling in the excess webbing 40 by hand. The latches 54 are then closed and the ratchet mechanism operated to tension the webbing 40 around the cylinders 31. The tension in the webbing acts to keep the webbing clamps 51 tightly closed.
In an alternative embodiment, not shown, only one webbing clamp 51 is used, the other side of the webbing 40 be affixed to a conventional webbing eye by passing through the eye and being affixed to itself by heavy duty stitching.

An apparatus for securing and tensioning webbing straps surrounding a plurality of gas cylinders, the apparatus comprising a ratchet operated jack and at least one webbing clamp, wherein the at least one webbing clamp comprises a latch which secures the webbing when the latch is closed, and which allows the webbing to run freely when the latch is open.
  2. 2. An apparatus for securing and tensioning webbing straps surrounding a plurality of gas cylinders, the apparatus comprising at least one webbing strap and at least one apparatus as claimed in claim 1.
  3. 3. A kit of parts for an apparatus as claimed in claim 2, the kit comprising at least one webbing strap and at least one apparatus as claimed in claim 1.
  4. 4. An apparatus substantially as described herein with reference to Figures 3 and 4.
