Abstract

A dummy spike made from expanded polystyrene or similar lightweight materials can be attached to the steering wheel of a vehicle to remind the driver of his vulnerability in the event of an accident and encourage safer driving. The spike has a metallic finish and resembles a real metal spike, approximately 120 mm in height, but it is hollow and will collapse readily upon impact. It may be cone-shaped or pyramidal, pointed or truncated, and may be attached to the steering wheel by hook and loop fasteners or a double-sided adhesive pad. The spike may also be attached to the fuel tank of a motorcycle.

Description

1 2428030 The Lijf SpiJk (Life Spike)
Background
Most road accidents are the result of people driving inappropriately by taking badly judged risks. This kind of action is frequently caused by the false sense of security encouraged by wearing a seat belt. One's vulnerability to danger is conveniently ignored.
Explaining the problem the invention solves The invention is designed to focus the driver's attention on the real personal dangers of driving in a careless manner.
The invention is designed to help prevent such road accidents by being a visible and tangible reminder of the potential consequences of a crash on the driver/rider.
What if it were a real spike? As a safety device, it applies to all drivers and riders.
What the invention does It is designed to improve the standard of driving/riding by encouraging a more careful attitude.
By reminding the driver/rider of their extreme vulnerability in an accident, the design will discourage people from taking undue risks.
The essential features The invention relates to a fitment which resembles a dangerous metal spike of up to, sayl2O mm. in length, with a base measurement of up to 60 mm.
It can be pointed or squared-off (truncated) at the tip.
The spike' may be pyramidal or conical, with a small hollow space inside, and made of a polystyrene or a similar type of material in a metallooking finish.
This will readily collapse upon impact and not constitute a hazard in itself.
It is fitted securely using a Velcro-type combination material but will enable easy removal/replacement when so required in a place such as on the steering wheel of a car, truck, etc. or the fuel tank of a mptorcycle.
lmpo, ant features It resembles a dangerous metal spike and as such is a highly visible reminder of the possible fatal consequences of a rash or otherwise ill-judged course of action.
Beginning of the detailed description
A preferred embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawing in which fig. 1 shows the basic elements of the device.
Detailed description 2 fiJ
Device made from expanded polystyrene or simar material and may be conical or pyramidal, pointed or truncated. L1M
Cone or pyramia with small hollow space inside, fixed to vehcle with Velcro-type burr and hook combination with self-adhesive reverse sides for ease of fixing/removal.
Alternatively, one double-sided adhesive pad.
Device finished in silver-grey to resemble stainless steel, Dimension a, up to about 120 mm.
Dimension b. up to about 80 mm. as diameter, or side of square, or otherwise max. width/depth Dimension c. up to about 60 mm. as diameter, or side of square, or otherwise max. width/depth Dimension d. rim or flange thickness, say 10 mm., or as appropriate. Claim

Claims (1)

  1. This invention is designed to resemble closely a steel spike, either
conical or pyramidal of three or more facets, of up to about 120 mm. in height and with a flanged base of about 60 mm. in diameter.
It is made of expanded polystyrene or other similar lightweight material.
The inside of this objectis as near hollow as possible.
The tip of this device is either pointed or flat (truncated).
