Abstract

Screw propellers. - Screw propeller blades are connected to the hub by a spherical joint allowing a limited inclination in the plane of rotation, and an inclination in the plane containing the propeller shaft accompanied by rotation on its axis for changing pitch. Each blade is weighted at its forward edge by a rod whereby the C-G of each crosssection is coincident with the C-P, and the line through the C-G passes through the centre of the spherical joint. Each cross-section is made with straight boundary lines except at the front and rear edges. On the boss 1 are offset sockets each having a spherical face b and screwed into which is a cap 3 having an inner spherical face a and acting as a retainer for the blade carrier 2. The hollow blade 5 is secured to a root member 4 having a closing plate 10 and adapted to be screwed into the carrier 2. From the projection c a link extends parallel to the propeller shaft and is coupled to an arm thereon. For lubricating the spherical faces, a pump 9 is provided.
