Abstract

447,424. Screw propellers. RICE, R. M. A., 42, Lowlands Road, Harrow, Middlesex. Nov. 11, 1935, No. 33499/34. [Class 114] A variable-pitch screw propeller has two blades altered in pitch as a result of a relative rotation of the hub on its shaft, the drive being effected by a hydraulic coupling which in addition to the transmission of torque is itself controlled by the centrifugal force of the fluid in the coupling and so produces the relative motion. The boss 3 of a screw propeller is freely mounted upon the shaft 1 and is coupled to an arm 18 fixed thereon by means of a rod 17 of a piston 12 operating in a cylinder 14 having at its other end a closure cap 15. The blade roots are mounted in hub sockets 4 and each is provided with a bevel wheel 6 geared to a common wheel 5, whereby relative rotation of the hub and shaft caused a pitch adjustment. During rotation the closure member 15 under centrifugal action operates on the liquid in the cylinder 14 and on change of speed effects a movement of the piston 12, and thereby the position of the hub relative to the shaft. The liquid movement in the cylinder 14 may be damped by providing a restriction 16a between the cap 15 and the main body.
