Abstract

A conventional square spindle (1) for mounting rotatable operating levers or knobs (5) at respective opposite sides of a door is modified by providing in one of its sides, at respective opposite ends thereof, recesses filled with non-metallic inserts (2) respectively. When such a modified spindle is used to mount said knobs (5), screws (3) are secured down in respective threaded fixing holes in the knobs in the normal manner to retain the knobs on the spindle. However with this modified spindle the screws (3) engage and penetrate the respective inserts (2). Since each insert extends longitudinally of the spindle, the spacing between the knobs retained on the spindle can be varied to compensate for different door and/or backplate widths. The inserts also enable a secure retention between the knobs and the spindle to be effected.

Description

2335478 THROUGH DOOR FIXING DEVICE THE PURPOSE OF THIS INVENTION IS TO
OFFER AN IMPROVEMENT TO EXISTING THROUGH DOOR FIXING DEVICES AS USED IN ARCHECTURAL HARDWARE LEVER FURNITURE WHICH CONNECT LEVERS OR KNOBS TOGETHER THROUGH A DOOR SO PROVIDING A MORE SECURE FIX IN USE.
THE FIXING DEVICE FOR WHICH NOVELTY IS CLAIMED CONSISTS OF STEEL SQUARE BAR INCORPORATING A NON METALLIC RECTANGULAR INSERT FITTED AT EACH END WHICH CORELATE WITH A PROPRIETARY KNURLED CUP POINT SOCKET SCREW. THE LENGTH OF THE STEEL SQUARE BAR AND INSERTS COMPENSATES FOR VARYING DOOR THICKNESSES AND TYPES OF LEVER BACKPLATES.
THE STEEL SQUARE BAR 1 HAS A RECTANGULAR SLOT AT EACH END THE SLOT IS SUBSEQUENTLY FILLED WITH THE NON METALLIC RECTANGULAR INSERT 2 WHICH RETURNS THE STEEL SQUARE BAR 1 TO A SQUARE SECTION AT ANY POINT ALONG ITS LENGTH.
AT THE FITTING STAGE THE SQUARE BAR ASSEMBLY 1 AND 2 IS LOCATED IN THE SQUARE HOLE OF THE OPERAIING LEVERIKNOB 5. THE SOCKET SCREW 3 WITH THE AID OF A SOCKET WRENCH 4 IS SCREWED DOWN ONTO THE INSERT 2, WITH AN ACCEPTABLE TORQUE APPLIED TO THE SOCKET WRENCH 4 THE SOCKET SCREW 3 WILL PENETRATE THE MATRIX OF THE INSERT 2 USUALLY BY A DISTANCE EQUAL TO THE THICKNESS OF THE INSERT 2.
THE CAUSE AND EFFECT IS AS FOLLOWS:- 1 - THE MATERIAL DISPLACED FROM THE INSERT 2 BY THE PENETRATION OF THE SOCKET SCREW 3 CONVERTS A CLEARANCE FIT H71h6 BETWEEN THE SQUARE BAR ASSEMBLY 1 AND 2 AND THE SQUARE HOLE 6 IN THE LEVERIKNOB 5 INTO AN INTERFERENCE FIT H7/s6 AS DEFINED IN BS4500.
2 - WHILST THE MATRIX OF THE INSERT 2 ALLOWS PENETRATION OF THE SOCKET SCREW 3 BUT DUE TO THE INSERT 2 BEING CONSTRAINED ON ALL ITS EIGHT FACES AND HAVING SUFFICIENT INHERENT DENSITY THE INSERT 2 WILL RESIST THE WITHDRAW OF THE SQUARE BAR 1 FROM THE LEVERIKNOB 5 WHEN EXCESSIVE FORCE IS APPLIED.
3 - AFTER THE SOCKET SCREW 3 HAS PENETRATED THE INSERT 2 THE KNURLED CUP POINT ON THE SOCKET SCREW 3 ENGAGES ONTO THE FACE OF THE SLOT IN THE SQUARE BAR 1. EXCESSIVE FORCE WILL BE REQUIRED TO WITHDRAW THE LEVERIKNOB 5 FROM THE SQUARE BAR 1.
4 - ALL THREE ELEMENTS ABOVE ALSO COMBINE TO GIVE AN ACCUMULATIVE EFFECT IN PROVIDING A SECURE FIX BETWEEN THE SQUARE BAR ASSEMBLE 1 AND 2 AND THE LEVER/KNOB 5 3

Claims (1)

1. An assembly for securing operating members at respective opposite sides of a movable wing, in use, the assembly comprising said operating members, and a spindle, opposite ends of which are received, in use, into respective first openings in said operating members to mount them at said opposite sides of said wing when said spindle is received therethrough, each operating member having a second opening for receiving a fixing element to retain the operating member on said spindle, the spindle having at or adjacent one of its ends a length of material different from the material of the spindle, into which different material, in use, said fixing element can engage, so that the operating member on said one end of the spindle can be retained on said spindle by said fixing element at any position along said length of different material, thereby to compensate for different distances required, in use, between said operating members.
