Abstract
There is disclosed a candle comprising a body portion (1) having therein a cavity (3) for serving as a reservoir for liquid fuel oil; a cap portion (2) that fits onto the body portion (1) so as to close the cavity (3) therein and that is removable from the body portion (1) so as to enable the reservoir to be re-filled; and a wick (7) extending through the cap portion (2) and into the cavity (3) in the body portion (1).
Description
CANDLE
The present invention relates to a candle, such as a candle used for ceremonial purposes.
According to the present invention, there is a provided a candle comprising a body portion having therein a cavity for serving as a reservoir for liquid fuel oil; a cap portion that fits onto the body portion so as to close the cavity therein and that is removable from the body portion so as to enable the reservoir to be re-filled; and a wick extending through the cap portion and into the cavity in the body portion.
Preferably, that portion of the wick which extends through the cap portion is surrounded by a sleeve, for example a metallic sleeve.
The body portion and/or the cap portion may be provided with at least one air inlet into the cavity.
The body portion, excluding the cavity therein, and excluding if present the air inlet therethrough, is preferably a solid body made of a plastics material, for example nylon. The cap portion, excluding a channel therein for the wick and if present the metallic sleeve to extend therethrough, and excluding if present the air inlet therethrough, is preferably a solid body made of a plastics material such as nylon.
Examples of other plastics materials for the body portion and/or the cap portion are polypropylene, polystyrene, polyethylene and poly(vinyl chloride).
Preferably, the wick is a glass fibre material.
The liquid fuel oil to be used in the candle is preferably a highly refined paraffin oil.
Reference will now be made, by way of example, to the drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a sectional view of a candle in accordance with the invention; and
Figure 2 is a plan view of the candle shown in
Figure 1.
Referring to the drawings, there is shown a candle consisting of a body portion 1 and a cap portion 2.
The body portion 1 is a solid cylinder of a plastics material such as nylon, in which a cylindrical cavity 3 has been formed, for example, by reaming. The cap portion 2 likewise consists of a solid body of a plastics material such as nylon, shaped in the form of a conical portion 4 and cylindrical portion 5, the latter of which is such as to fit into the cavity 3 in the body portion 1.
The cap portion 2 has extending therethrough a metallic sleeve 6, and a wick 7 extends through the metallic sleeve 6 and into the cavity 3 so that the lower end thereof is immersed in the reservoir of liquid fuel oil that in use is contained in the cavity 3.
The cap portion 2 is readily removable from the body portion to enable the reservoir to be re-filled.
An air inlet extends through the cap portion 2, so as in use to allow air to enter the cavity 3 to prevent a reduction in pressure in the cavity 3 during removal of the oil by capillary movement along the wick 7 and subsequent burning at the tip of the wick 7.
The air inlet is in the form of a cylindrical channel 8 and a pin hole 9 connecting the channel 8 to the outer surface of the conical portion 4.
Claims (7)
1. A candle comprising a body portion having therein a cavity for serving as a reservoir for liquid fuel oil; a cap portion that fits onto the body portion so as to close the cavity therein and that is removable from the body portion so as to enable the reservoir to be re-filled; and a wick extending through the cap portion and into the cavity in the body portion.
2. A candle as claimed in claim 1, wherein that portion of the wick which extends through the cap portion is surrounded by a sleeve.
3. A candle as claimed in claim 1 or 2, wherein the body portion and/or the cap portion is provided with at least one air inlet into the cavity.
4. A candle as claimed in claim 1, 2 or 3, wherein the body portion (excluding the cavity therein and excluding if present the air inlet therethrough) is a solid body made of a plastics material, and/or wherein the cap portion (excluding a channel therein for the wick and if present the metallic sleeve to extend therethrough, and excluding if present the air inlet therethrough) is a solid body made of a plastics material.
5. A candle as claimed in claim 4, wherein the plastics material is nylon.
6. A candle as claimed in any of claims 1 to 5, wherein the wick is a glass fibre material.
7. A candle as claimed in claim 1, substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to, and as shown in, the drawings.
