Valves controlled by pilot or relay valves. - An hydraulic relay apparatus for controlling fluid flow, e.g. steam flow to turbines comprises a column of liquid in a pipe a the head of which is varied by variations in the pressure of the fluid in a conduit j. These variations act through a spring-controlled diaphragm h to operate valves f, e controlling the entrance and exit of liquid to and from the pipe a, and the consequent variations of head in the pipe a act through a diaphragm d to operate a valve q controlling the inlet and exhaust of a hydraulic cylinder o, the piston of which is connected to the counterweighted lever of a reducing valve k. The pipe a is supplied from a constant level tank b which receives the exhaust liquid from the cylinder o, and also liquid from a supply pipe p through a float operated valve. In a modification, one of the valves e, f, is replaced by a constriction in the pipe a.
