Abstract
To ring spin flax sliver in a wet condition, dry sliver is wetted in heated water trough 1, drafted in zones 1 and 2 and ring spun at 5. In drafting zone 2 the sliver is shaped into a narrow band by passage over and under movable, grooved guides 4. The wet spinning is said to improve yarn appearance and strength.
Description
METHOD FOR SPINNING WET FLAX SLIVER
THIS INVENTION RELATES TO THE SPINNING OF FLAX SLIVER INTO A
FINISHED YARN IN WET CONDITION
The existing process consists of dry flax sliver being passed through a drafting zone or zones and then a twist added via a traveller to produce a finished yarn. This yarn is generally hairy in appearance and of low quality.
According to the present invention, a system of guides are used to guide the dry sliver from a can into a heated water trough. FIG 1(1). The sliver which is now wet passes through further guides into a drafting zone, (ZONE 1 FIG 1), where it is drafted and controlled using a system of rollers and a weighted arm. FIG 1 (2) (3). From here it enters the next drafting zone (ZONE 2 FIG 1) where the sliver is again drafted, formed and controlled using the afore mentioned system, but with the addition of an adjustable guide FIG 1(4).
This guide consists of a number of elements. FIG 2.
The sliver passes through this group of guides in the following manner.
Over guide ( I ) FIG 2, under guide (2) FIG 2 and over guide (3) FIG 2. These in turn shape and control the fibres of the sliver into a narrow band.
The profile of these guides can be seen in FIG 2(5).
On exiting the drafting zone, the sliver is now twisted and spun using existing methods.

This system of spinning results in a better finished yarn in both appearance and strength.
Giving results similar to those of a yarn in which the sliver has undergone a number of further processes before spinning.
Claims (2)
1. A method tor spinning flax sliver or blends in a wet condition on a modified ring spinning machine into a twisted finished yarn.
2. A method for spinning as claimed in claim I on a modified machine as described and
illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
