Abstract

A means is provided of enabling vehicle brake lamps to flash at a predetermined frequency once the vehicle has slowed to a predetermined speed or is stationary. Either existing Antilock Braking System circuitry or other sensor or device which could indicate vehicle motion is used to provide a signal to the modified brake lamp electrical circuit. At normal road speeds, application of the brake pedal provides constant luminance of the brake lamps.

Description

FLASHING BRAKE LAMPS DESCRIPTION This invention relates to flashing vehicle brake lamp(s).
Refer to Figure 1 which is a schematic of the system design. Figure 1 shows a four wheel vehicle, with two brake lamps, as an example of a typical modern vehicle.
Many modem vehicles are fitted with an Antilock Braking System (ABS). Fundamentally the ABS system comprises Wheel Speed Transducers (1) and an ABS Computer (2) which takes inputs from the Wheel Speed Transducers (1). If, above a certain minimum vehicular road speed, the ABS Computer (2) detects zero wheel motion upon braking, a signal is output to the braking system to release the brake pressure to that wheel so enabling it to rotate again.
Below a minimum vehicular road speed, as detected by the ABS Computer (2), full brake pressure is maintained enabling the vehicle to come to a stop. The vehicle brake lamps operate from a constant DC supply whenever the brake pedal is applied and irrespective of vehicle road speed. This in itself is not a new system and not part of this invention.
According to this invention, certain conditions will cause the vehicle brake lamps (6) to flash.
As part of the invention, there is provided a discrete signal (7) either from the ABS system, as briefly discussed above, or from any other sensor or device which could indicate vehicle motion. The discrete (7) signal has two states: State 1 Vehicle in motion.
State 2 Vehicle moving slowly/stationary.
The discrete signal (7) is connected to a dedicated relay (3). Dependent upon the state of the discrete signal (7), a flasher unit (5) is either switched into or out of the brake lamp circuit by the relay.
If the vehicle is stationary or slow moving (slow moving speed to be determined by a combination of legislation and system performance), and the vehicle's ignition/power is on, then the brake lamp(s) (6) are caused to flash (at a frequency determined by a combination of legislation and system performance). The design can allow this operation whether or not the brake pedal (4) is operated. As shown by the dotted line (8).
If the vehicle is moving, and above the design speed threshold, and the brake pedal (4) is operated, then the brake lamp(s) (6) operate from a constant DC source ie in steady state, non-flashing mode.

Claims (6)

  3. 3. Flashing Brake Lamp System as claimed in claim 1 and claim 2 and fitted to any type of road-using vehicle with ABS (ABS may be mechanical or electrical/mechanical).
  4. 4. Flashing Brake Lamp System as claimed in claim 1 and claim 2 and fitted to any type of road-using vehicle with alternative sensor or device which could indicate vehicle motion.
  5. 5. Flashing Brake Lamp System as claimed in claim 1 and claim 2 and in claim 3 and claim 4 for any number of brake lamps.
  6. 6. Flashing Brake Lamp System in the above claims is optionally dependent on the brake pedal being applied when vehicle stationary or slow moving.
