Abstract

A vehicle rear light system which operates on the brake light system when the rear fog warning lights are illuminated. When the fog lights are on and the brakes are applied, the brake lights will flash on and off either simultaneously or alternately. When the rear fog lights are turned off, the brake lights revert back to normal operation. An alternate system involves the flashing of the fog lights when the brakes are applied.

Description

REAR FOG AND BRAKE LIGHT WARNING SYSTEM
This invention relates to the brake light system on motor vehicles and commercial vehicles.
Currently the brake light and rear fog warning light bulbs are of the same intensity, therefore when the brakes are applied with the rear fog warning lights on there are a number of red lights on the rear of the vehicle all constant and of the same intensity.
This can be confusing to the following drivers in foggy conditions depending on the number and position on the vehicle of the rear fog warning lights and whether all the relevant bulbs are working. If one or more bulbs are not working the following driver could think the vehicle in front only has rear fog warning lights on when in fact it is braking and therefore causing an obvious danger. This is more evident on automatic vehicles when brakes are applied more often and for longer continuous periods. The invention is self contained and can be fitted at time of car manufacture and only requires wiring into the existing wiring loom, or can be sold and fitted as an after market addition thus allowing not only new but older vehicles to benefit from this invention.
According to this invention it operates on the brake light system when the rear fog warning lights are in use on the vehicle.
The system will operate automatically when the rear fog warning lights are turned on. When the fog lights are on and the brakes are applied the brake lights will flash on and off either simultaneously or alternately, whilst the rear fog light will remain on constantly without flashing.
Some possible combinations are described in figures 3, 4, 5 and 6 but only whilst the brake pedal is applied. When the rear fog warning lights are turned off the brake lights revert back to normal operation of constant illumination when the brakes are applied.
The syem is opeted through a relay and a flshng These can be separate or manured as a one-pie" unit.

Claims (2)

1. The rear fog and brake light warning system would Operate on the vehicles brake lights circuits only when the rear fog light or lights are in use, the system would be activated and de-activated automatically by the use of the rear fog light switch, the flashing of the brake lights is possible in various different combinations, this is achieved by the use of electronic components wired into the vehicles wiring harness, this can be done at time of manufacture or as an after market accessory.
2. A rear fog and brake light warning system as claimed in Claim I where the rear fog light or lights flash instead of the brake lights.
