Abstract
An adjustable drain fitting 10 for installation at a wall alongside a junction between the wall and a floor. The fitting includes a collector outlet piece 11 for attachment to a drain pipe 12 passing through the wall and a collector inlet piece 15 connected telescopically to the collector outlet piece 11 so as to be movable relative thereto in situ by a tiler in a direction parallel to the wall. The collector inlet piece 15 has a water inlet opening 19 for presentation vertically at the wall and positionable flush to floor tiles by the tiler.
Description
Adjustable Drain Fitting
Background of the Invention
The present invention relates to drain fittings. More particularly, although not exclusively, the invention relates to a drain fitting to be fitted at the base of a wall adjacent to the floor in a bathroom for example.
Bathrooms, shower recesses, laundries and kitchens in some countries have, a drain through the bottom of the wall adjacent to the floor. The drain serves as a path for water to escape to the sewerage system. During installation' it can be difficult to align the drain correctly with the floor tiles as the drain must be rifted through the wall prior to laying of the tiles, The plumber can usually only estimate how thick the floor tiles might be. If the drain is fitted too high, extra tile a & esive or sand and cement must be used to lay the floor tiles in order to make up the difference. If the drain is fitted too low, the floor tiles might have to cover part of the drain fitting's grate. This can be unsightly and will reduce the flow capacity of the drain in extreme cases.
Object of the Invention It is an object of the present invention to overcome or substantially ameliorate the above disadvantages and/or more generally to provide an adjustable drain fitting.
Disclosure of the Invention
There is disclosed herein an adjustable drain fitting for installation at a wall alongside a junction between the wall and a floor, the drain fitting comprising: a collector outlet piece for attachment to a drain pipe passing through the wall, a collector inlet piece connected telescopically to the collector outlet piece so as to be movable relative thereto in situ in a direction substantially parallel to the wall and comprising a water inlet opening for presentation substantially vertically at the wall and positionable flush to floor tiles.
Preferably the fitting further comprises a grate covering the water inlet opening.
Preferably the collector inlet piece includes a tongue and the collector outlet piece includes a lip behind which the tongue is received.
Preferably the tongue is approximately as high as a likely degree of variation in thickness of the floor tiles plus tile base between the floor tiles and the floor.
Preferably the collector outlet piece has extending therefrom the coupling for connection to the drain pipe.
Preferably the collector outlet piece, collector inlet piece and grate are substantially rectangular.
Preferably the collector inlet piece includes a slot through which a fastener can extend to secure the collector inlet piece to the collector outlet piece.
:0 Preferably the grate is attached to the collector inlet piece by threaded fasteners.
Brief Description of the Drawlugs
IS A preferred form of the present invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein: Figure 1 is a schematic parts-exploded perspective illustration of an adjustable drain fitting, and Figure 2 is a schematic perspective illustration of the fitting of Figure 1 assembled, but without its grate attached. [:
In the accompanying drawings there is depicted schematically a drain fitting 10 typically formed of moulded plastics material such as PVC for example. The fitting 10 includes a collect outlet piece 11 for connection to a drain pipe 12. To this end, the drain pipe 12 includes a pipe coupling 13 into which a collector coupling 14 is received telescopically and glued with plumbers adhesive.
The fitting 10 also includes collector inlet piece 15 to be received vertically and telescopically by the outlet piece 11. Moreover, the inlet piece 15 includes a pair of laterally opposed flanges 22 to be received in front of and abutting leading edges 23 of the outlet piece 11. There is an inlet opening 19 in between the flanges 22 via which water passes from a tiled floor surface into the inlet piece 15.
Beneath the opening 19, there is a downwardly depending tongue 20 that is receive) behind a lip 21 of the outlet piece 11.
There is a slot 26 in the back of the collector inlet piece 15. This slot aligns filth an aperture 24 in the back of the collector outlet piece 11. A screw (not shown) passed through the slot 26 is received by and the aperture 24 to secure the two components together in situ.
There is a plastics or stainless steel grate 16 that can be fitted between the flanges 22 of the collector inlet piece 15 and stainless steel screws 17 are used to attach the grate 16 to pre-tapped screw holes 18 in the inlet 1O piece 15. The bottom edge 25 of the grate 16 would be received just above the tongue 20 to cover the opening 19.
In use, a plumber or drainer would insert the collector coupling 14 into the pipe coupling 13 pre-installed through the bathroom wall just above floor level. Quick- setting adhesive would be applied at the telescopic connection between these parts so that the back of the collector outlet piece 11 would be flush with the wall, NO The bottom extremity of the collector outlet piece 11 might abut the floor. The collector inlet piece 15 and grate 16 need not be fitted by the plumber to the outlet piece 11 at this stage, but might be attached for the convenience of the tiler later on.
When the tiler arriVeB tO do his work, he can install the floor tiles and then fit tile collector inlet piece to the collector outlet piece sc. that the bottom edge 27 of the inlet opening 19 iB flush with the walking sur$ace of the ú100r tiles, The tongue 20 will reside behind the lip 21. A stainless steel screw can then be inserted through the slot 26 to secure the collector inlet piece to the threaded aperture 24 of the outlet piece. The grate 16 can then be attached to the collector inlet piece 15 using stainless steel screws 17. The tiler can then attach the wall tiles to the wall around the fitting 10 and the drain will present a neat grate 16 with its bottom edge 25 level with or just beneath the floor tile's walking surface.
It should be appreciated that modifications and alterations obvious to those skilled in the art are not to be considered as beyond of the scope of the present invention. For example, the drain fitting might be installed in the float adjacent to a wall with the drain pipe 12 depending downwardly therefrom.
