Abstract

A radiator shut off valve includes a quarter turn ball valve (4), that is either open or closed, a threaded end (5) for attachment to a radiator (2) and a nipple end (6) and trapped nut (7) for attachment to a lockshield, handwheel or thermostatic radiator valve (3).

Description

<Desc/Clms Page number 1>
RADIATOR SHUT OFF VALVE The invention relates to a radiator shut off valve enabling the removal of a radiator from the wall whilst keeping the water in the radiator. Ideal for decorating or for radiator replacement.
Removal of a radiator is an inherently dirty process which often involves two people, after shutting of the lockshield, handwheel or thermostatic valves or combinations, undoing the connection to the valve and trying to trap the water in the radiator normally using your thumb, lifting the radiator of its mounting brackets and either emptying into a bucket in situ'or carrying it outside full of water with your thumb over the outlet and inlet. The water inside the heating system is usually dirty black sludge especially in the bottom of radiators, this is extremely difficult to remove from carpets or other interior flooring. As a result of this many people do not bother decorating the walls or skirting board behind a radiator.
The shut off valve would be as a direct replacement for the current adaptor or tailpiece that attaches between the radiator and a conventional lockshield, handwheel or thermostatic radiator valve.
The shut off valve enables removal of a radiator by closing the lockshield, handwheel or thermostatic valve, closing the shut off valve, undoing the nipple joint between the new valve and the lockshield, handwheel or thermostatic valve, and separating. The only leakage of water will be that trapped between the ball valve and the lockshield, handwheel or thermostatic valve, this amount of water could easily be absorbed by a cloth or sponge. After carrying out this operation on both sides of the radiator it could be removed full of water from the brackets.
Accordingly, the essential features of this shut off valve are: 1) It is an open or closed valve. (based on a quarter turn ball valve).
2) It interfaces with the radiator using a male threaded end.
3) It interfaces with the lockshield, handwheel or thermostatic valve by a nipple end.
4) It can be directional or non directional.
A preferred embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawing.
Figure 1 shows an exploded view of the position of the shut off valve 1 relative to a radiator 2 and radiator valve 3.
Figure 2 is a view of the shut off valve 1.
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
As shown in figure 2 the shut off valve incorporates a quarter turn shut off or service ball valve 4. This should be non directional, but can be directional.
A 1/2"male thread 5 (or 1/8", 318", 1/2" or 3/4" male thread of any other specified size) for attachment to the radiator.
A nipple end 6 with a nut or trapped nut 7 for attachment to the lockshield, handwheel or thermostatic radiator valve. This would be of various sizes or designs to interface with all lockshield, handwheel or thermostatic valves.
The valve should be of a similar length to current tailpieces or adaptors to enable direct replacement in existing radiator installations, this would not be as critical in all new installations.
The valve will incur no additional installation time as it is a direct replacement for existing tailpieces or adaptors.
