IN.TAKE COWLING FO0R A.TOI.LET ODOU.R.EXT.RACT~pION I SYSTEM :.The following statement is a full description of this invention, including the best Smthod of performing it known to me:- I 19 .I 9* 00 9. 99 t i 2 AIR INTAKE COWLING FOR A TOILET ODOUR EXTRACTION SYSTEM This invention is a means of preventing vitiated air from a toilet contaminating water and components within the toilet's cistern when the cistern is used as a means of conducting air from the toilet bowl to an external odour extraction system.
o e S.As a requirement by many water supply and health authorities when a toilet's cistern is connected to a common water .oo supply mains the water within the cistern must remain o 1 0 potable and the Jomponents free from any external contamination.
The principle of evacuating air and odours directly from a toilet bowl by drawing the air through a toilet's flush pipe and cistern's internal overflow duct is not new but in previous cases the systems used either interfered with the cistern's function or flush performance or the flow of e vitiated air came into contact with component surfaces or water within the cistern which gave rise to possible contamination.
The problem of contamination and interference with the cistern's performance characteristics have been overcome by this air intake cowling. The cowling is of rigid or semi rigid construction fitted to the intake of the air extraction line that passes into the cistern.
I -e According to the present invention there is provided a toilet odour extraction system adapted for use in relation to toilets with cisterns having internal overflow ducts of the type which direct overflow water into the toilet bowl thereby creating an open duct from flushing water delivery ducting below the flush valve to air within the cistern when the flush valve is closed; the system comprising a rigid or semi-rigid cowling mounted within the toilet system adjacent the inlet to the internal i "overflow duct but spaced therefrom; the cowling having an open intake adjacent the internal overflow duct and an exhaust outlet plumbed to an extraction fan adapted to remove air entering the cowling from the internal overflow duct to an area remote from the room in which the a. e toilet sits without leakage of such air onto any surface within the cistern apart from the internal surfaces of the overflow duct, cowling and exhaust plumbing; the extraction fan being of adequate strength to draw air from the toilet bowl up the internal overflow pipe into the cowling and to the remote area.
i 's IP~e 4- The cowl is mounted over the cistern's internal water overflow duct and always remains above the maximum water height within the cistern. When the cistern is closed to the surrounding atmosphere via a lid or panel and the air extraction system is functioning the cowling contains all the vitiated air flowing through the overflow pipe as it enters the extraction duct thereby preventing the air flowing into other areas within the cistern.
In the most common form the air intake cowling is semi circular and cylindrical in shape with one end closed and the other connected to the air extraction ducting intake.
The open side of the cowling sits over the internal overflow i pipe.
In another form the air collection cowling is formed as an integral part of the cistern's internal mechanism with the air extraction duct connecting directly to it.
The cowling can be made of a rigid or semi rigid material usually a moulded plastic.
To assist with understanding the invention, reference will now be made to the accompanying drawings which show one example of the invention.
FIG 1 shows one example of an air intake cowling for a toilet odour extraction system.
FIG 2 shows the application of such an air intake cowling for a toilet odour extraction system.

I Cl;- s P~~I Referring to FIG 1 it can be seen that the air intake cowling comprises a body section with locating lugs (2) that secure the cowl in relation to the cistern wall. The cowl is secured to the cistern wall by a locking nut set on thread section The air extraction duct is secured to the cowling neck Referring to FIG 2 shows the cowling in a typical installation within a toilet cistern. The cowling is secured to the cistern wall via a locking nut When the cistern lid is in position and the air extraction system is operating, air flow (11) from the flush pipe flows through the internal overflow duct (9) directly into the cowling which is set directly over the internal overflow duct Since the pressure within the cowling is relatively lower than the surrounding atmosphere the air flow (11) is always directed into the cowling and of away from the surrounding surfaces.

Claims (4)
1. A toilet odour extraction system adapted for use in relation to toilets with cisterns having internal overflow ducts of the type which direct overflow water into the toilet bowl thereby creating an open duct from flushing water delivery ducting below the flush valve to air within the cistern when the flush valve is closed; the system comprising a rigid or semi-rigid cowling mounted within the toilet system adjacent the inlet to the internal overflow duct but 4 spaced therefrom; the cowling having an open intake adjacent the S" internal overflow duct and an exhaust outlet plumbed to an extraction fan adapted to remove air entering the cowling from the internal overflow duct to an area remote from the room in which the toilet sits without leakage of such air onto any surface within the cistern apart from the internal surfaces of the overflow duct, cowling and exhaust plumbing; the extraction fan being of adequate strength to draw air from the toilet bowl up the intenal overflow pipe into the cowling and to the remote area. 2. A system in accordance with claim 1 hereof wherein the cowling is formed as an integral part of the cistern's internal mechanism with air extraction plumbing exiting directly therefrom.
3. A system in accordance with any one of the preceding claims wherein the intake of the cowling is of greater cross sectional area than that of either the internal overflow or the exhaust plumbing exiting from the cowling.

A system in accordance with claim 1 hereof wherein the cowling is directly or indirectly attached to and located by a cistern wall as opposed to the cistern's internal mechanism. •DATED this 3 rd day of October 1997.
