Abstract

A flood protection device for doors and air bricks has a base frame screwed into the wall around the aperture to be protected, either the sides and bottom of a doorway or all four sides of an air brick, figure 1, and sealed with mastic. A sheet of non-corroding material forming the barrier, figure 2, is secured to the base frame by means of stainless steel bolts with a neoprene seal between. In an alternative embodiment, when used with an aperture reveal, the base frame is L-shaped (figure 3) although the barrier is mounted face-to-face as in the first embodiment.

Description

1 2362416 Door and Vent Dams The most common flood protection is the use
of temporary sandbags. This invention replaces the use of sandbags, with removable door and vent dams for buildings susceptible to flooding.
This invention once in place, offers a quick, light and easy to install method of flood protection.
When not in use the dams can be stored using minimal space.
The door and vent dams plus associated components are to be of noncorroding materials.
Figure 1 shows in perspective the base plates. These are secured around vent and door openings using countersunk screws.
Additional tapped holes are in place for securing the dams.
Prior to base plates being installed any protusions on the walls, preventing a flush finish will have to be removed.
Site conditions will dictate the type of fixings. I.E. rawl plugs, red heads or chemical fixings.
The base plates are secured using countersunk; stainless steel screws. A waterproof seal is achieved between the wall and base plate using a clear mastic sealant.
Figure 2 illustrates the dams. These are made of non-corroding sheet material. Door dams will need additional stiffening as illustrated. The seal between the dam and base plate is achieved using 5mm thick neoprene "rubber". The neoprene is stuck to the dam using a propriety adhesive.
The dam is secured to the base plate using stainless steel bolts.

Claims (1)

  1. Claims
The illustrations provided show examples of door openings and vents. A variation of design can be achieved with site inspection.
Once installed the base plates are a permanent fixture. Because of the materials used this installation should be maintenance free.
The dams for an average dwelling can be fitted within minutes.
When not in use the dams being of lightweight construction can easily be stored for future use. The dams should also be maintenance free by virtue of the construction materials.
