Description

DRAUGHT SEALING DEVICE This invention relates to draught sealing devices.
Draughts may enter a room via a junction between a wall and a floor. A carpet placed at this junction will partly seal it, however some air can still pass through. As draughts usually carry dirt, the edge of the carpet will collect this dirt. In warm rooms where air conditioning units are in operation, a positive air pressure is created within the room and the air seeks a path to atmosphere. As external doors and windows are usually kept closed, a common low resistance path for the air is the gap between the floor and the wall. The air from inside the room also carries dirt which will be deposited on the edge of the carpet as the air leaves the room.
It is known from GB 2194567 to use a device to seal the junction between the wall and the floor. However this device has been found to encounter certain problems. The device is fixed to the wall and the floor by adhesive strips, but it has been found that the force of the carpet on the device tends to pull the device away from the wall.
The device seals to the floor by virtue of a sealing member along the edge of the device remote from the wall. However, in some circumstances, draughts may still enter and pass up through the joins between the devices. It is an object of this invention to provide a device for sealing a junction between a wall and a floor which reduces these problems.
In accordance with this invention there is provided a device for sealing a junction between a wall and a floor, the device being generally of L-section and comprising; first and second elongate substantially flat strips for positioning respectively against the wall and floor; a first sealing portion extending along or adjacent the free longitudinal edge of the first strip remote from the second strip; and a second sealing portion extending along or adjacent the junction between the first and second strips, subjacent a surface portion of the second strip which, in use, contacts the floor.
Preferably at least one of the first and second sealing portions is a wing-like projection which is flexible and resilient.
Desirably the second sealing portion is a wing-like projection which is inclined towards the second strip such that the wing-like projection forms an acute angle with the second strip.
Conveniently the first sealing portion is a wing-like projection which is inclined to form an obtuse angle with the first strip on the side of the first strip which in use is adjacent the wall or which is inclined to form an acute angle with the first strip on the side of the first strip which, in use, is adjacent the wall.
Desirably a device in accordance with the invention comprises a longitudinal recess in the second strip adjacent the second sealing portion, said recess being adapted to accommodate the second sealing portion. This is particularly useful when the device is used on a very smooth floor, such as a marble floor. Similarly, the device comprises a recess in the first strip adjacent the first sealing portion.
At least one of the first and second sealing portions, if desired, may be a band of expanded foam rubber.
Conveniently a device in accordance with the invention comprises means provided on the second strip to position a carpet gripper. Preferably the means is an upright rib spaced from the first strip. Advantageously the edge of the upright rib remote from the second strip has a lip to provide a pocket adapted to receive a leading edge of carpet gripper. Desirably the rib is inclined so that the edge of the rib remote from the second strip is closer to the first strip than the edge adjacent the second strip. This is particularly useful when the leading edge of the carpet gripper is bevelled as the bevelled edge of the gripper can lie against the inclined rib thus providing better engagement of the gripper and the rib than if the rib were upright. Preferably the rib is spaced from the first strip by no more than fifty per cent of the width of the second strip.
Conveniently the edge of the second strip remote from the first strip is bevelled to facilitate movement of the carpet gripper onto the second strip.
Typically a wall in a room comprises a skirting board at the junction between the wall and the floor. In use, a carpet gripper is placed on the second strip of the device and pushed until the leading edge of the gripper abuts the positioning rib. The device, together with the carpet gripper, is then pushed against the skirting board and the floor. The device and carpet gripper are secured to the floor by nails which are nailed through the carpet gripper and the second strip of the device. The second strip maybe any suitable width, conveniently between 10 mm and 40 mm, but is preferably approximately 30 mm in width. Where it is not desirable or possible to use nails in the floor, for example with a marble floor, the carpet gripper and the device may be fixed to the floor by using an adhesive such as hot melt adhesive. The adhesive is placed on the floor and the device and carpet gripper are then pushed onto the adhesive. Where adhesive is to be used, the second strip is preferably narrower in width, preferably approximately 20 mm, so that part of the gripper (when located correctly on the second strip) projects beyond the second strip and contacts the adhesive. The second strip may also be perforated to allow some adhesive through the strip to contact with the carpet gripper. This may be particularly useful when the device is used on a concrete floor.
The height of the first strip may be any suitable height depending on the size of the gap between the wall and the floor, but may be, for example, 21 mm. The distance between the edges of the first and second sealing portions remote from their respective strips and their respective strips is approximately 5 mm when the device is not in use and the sealing portions are relaxed.
The upright positioning rib on the second strip is preferably situated between 5 and 15 mm from the first strip, for example 12 mm. Carpet gripper needs to be separated by 5 to 15 mm from the wall in order to allow space for the end of the carpet to be accommodated. By pushing the carpet gripper onto the device until the leading edge of the gripper abuts the upright rib, the gripper will automatically be in the correct position. The lip at the top of the upright rib acts as a pocket to accommodate the leading edge of the carpet gripper, and also aids positioning of the carpet. Carpet is laid over the carpet gripper and the end of the carpet is pushed down into the space between the upright rib and the first strip. It is an advantage of the preferred embodiment of the invention that it has been found to reduce the installation time to approximately half that required with the prior art device.
It also has been found to provide a more effective seal at the junction between the wall and floor.
The device may be made from a one piece extruded plastics material that is economical and simple to manufacture.
Reference is now made to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device in accordance with a first embodiment of the invention; Figure 2 shows a section of the device of Figure 1 in engagement with a skirting board and floor; Figure 3 shows alternative embodiments of part of the device of Figure 1; and Figure 4 shows a further embodiment of the invention.
The device (1), shown in Figures 1 to 3, for sealing a junction between a wall (2) and floor (3), is a unitary plastics extrusion (for example of UPVC) of generally Lshaped section and comprises a first strip (4) and a second strip (5). The wall (2) comprises a skirting board (6) which is attached at the junction between the wall (2) and floor (3).
A flexible, resilient sealing portion is integrally formed with the first strip (4) along the free longitudinal edge thereof remote from the second strip (5). This sealing portion (7) is inclined away from the second strip (5) towards the wall (2). A second flexible sealing portion (8) is formed integrally with the device along the junction between the first strip (4) and the second strip (5).
Alternatively, the second sealing portion (8) may be formed integrally with the second strip (5) adjacent the junction between the first strip (4) and the second strip (5). The sealing portion (8) is inclined towards the second strip (5) away from the wall (2). The first and second sealing portions (7, 8) are wing-like projections of thin, wedgeshaped cross-section tapering from the strips (4, 5) to a remote edge. A longitudinal recess (9) is provided in the second strip (5) adjacent the sealing portion (8). When the device (1) is used on a very smooth, even floor, the sealing portion (8) is accommodated by the longitudinal recess (9).
An upright rib (10) runs along the length of the second strip (5) and is spaced from the first strip (4) by 10 mm, see also Figure 3a. In a second embodiment shown in Figure 3b, the upright rib (10) is provided with a lip (11) which forms a pocket to accommodate the leading edge of the carpet gripper. The rib (10) is inclined towards the wall (2), so that the top edge of the rib (10) is closer to the first strip (4) than the bottom edge.
The longitudinal edge (12) of the second strip (5) is bevelled, to aid positioning of the carpet gripper on the second strip (5). Carpet gripper (17) and carpet (18) are shown in dotted lines in Figure 2.
Figure 4 shows a further embodiment of the invention. The arrangement of the device is substantially the same as the device of Figure 1. The first strip (4) and the second strip (5) are orientated at an angle of 910 to each other.
In this embodiment, the part of the second strip (5) between the bevelled edge (12) and the upright rib (10) is 1.0 mm thick, the part of the second strip (5) between the upright rib (10) and the first strip (4) is 2.0 mm thick. This difference in thickness of the second strip (5) creates a shoulder (16) into which the rib (10) is incorporated. The thickness of the second strip (5) plus the rib (10) is 2.5 mm. The distance between the rib (10) and the bevelled edge (12) is 18 mm.
A flexible, resilient sealing portion (14) is integrally formed with the first strip (4) adjacent the longitudinal edge thereof remote from the second strip (5). The sealing portion (14) may alternatively be formed along the said longitudinal edge of the first strip (4). The sealing portion (14) is inclined towards the second strip (5) such that it forms an acute angle with the first strip (4) on the side of the first strip (4) which, in use, is adjacent the wall. A longitudinal recess (15) is provided in the first strip (4) adjacent the sealing portion (14), the sealing portion (14) being accommodated by the recess (15) when the device is used against a smooth, even wall. The position of the sealing portion (14) in this embodiment avoids the possible danger of the sealing portion being damaged or cut off by the carpet fitter during installation.
As an alternative to the wing-like projections, the sealing portions (8, 14) may be provided by expanded foam bands of suitable width. In use the sealing portions (7, 8, 14) seal the junction (13) so that draughts which may enter via this junction are prevented from entering the room.
