Description

SPECIFICATION Improvements in and relating to sealing strips The invention relates to flexible sealing strips such as in the form of sealing strips for mounting around door or window openings on motor vehicle bodies for example.
Some embodiments of the invention to be described by way of example include channel-shaped strips for receiving window glass and soft sealing strips for mounting around vehicle door openings.
According to the present invention, there is provided a sealing strip having a surface for sealing against a movable member, the said surface comprising low friction polymeric material.
According to the present invention, there is also provided a channel-shaped member for receiving window glass, the member being in the form of channel-shaped plastics or rubber material supporting at least one inner surface for making contact with the window glass, the said surface being the surface of a PTFE layer.
According to the invention, there is further provided a sealing strip made of soft plastics or rubber material and supporting means for supporting the sealing strip around an opening for closure by a member, the sealing strip supporting a surface against which the said closure member closes, this surface being the surface of a PTFE layer.
According to the invention; there is still further provided a sealing strip structure for sealing the door opening of a vehicle body, the sealing strip structure being in the form of a channel-shaped supporting member for placing on and gripping a mounting flange extending around the door opening and a sealing strip of soft plastics or rubber material attached to an outside surface of the supporting member so as to be supported thereby around the opening, the sealing strip structure including at least one pre-formed relatively sharp bend or corner for matching a bend or corner in the door opening, and a layer of PTFE placed on the surface of the sealing strip in the region of the bend or corner and so positioned as to provide a low friction surface into contact with which the door moves when closing the opening.
Sealing strips embodying the invention will now be described, by way of example, and with reference to the accompanying diagrammatic drawings in which: Figure 1 is a cross-section through a window channel embodying the invention; Figure 2 is a view corresponding to that of Figure 3 but showing a modification; Figure 3 is a side view of a door seal embodying the invention; Figure-4 is a perspective view of part of the door seal of Figure 2, to an enlarged scale; and Figure 5 is a cross-section through a waist seal embodying the invention.
Figure 1 shows a window channel 5 which is held in a metal support 6 in a vehicle door frame for example. The window channel 5 is made of generally channel-shaped plastics or rubber material 8 having embedded within it a metal reinforcing carrier 10 of any suitable form. The metal carrier 10 may for example be made of U-shaped metal strip elements arranged side-by-side to define a channel and either connected to each other by short flexible connecting links or disconnected from each other.
Instead, however, it may be made of wire looped to and fro across the channel. Other forms of carrier may be used instead. The metal carrier 10 is resilient and exerts a bias so as to urge the side walls of the window channel 5 outwardly so as to press them into firm frictional contact with the inside surfaces of the metal support 6, thus holding the window channel 5 firmly in position.
The window channel 5 is produced (preferably by extrusion) so as to define a raised surface 12 and flexible lips 14 and 16, extending along the length of the channel, the surface 12 extending along the base of the channel and the lips 14 and 16 extending along the side walls of the channel.
Layers of a low friction plymeric material 12A, 14A and 16A are formed on the surface 12 and the lips 14 and 16 respectively. In use, window glass enters in the direction of arrow 18 and makes contact with these layers 12A, 14A and 16A. The layers 12A, 14A and 16A provide a very effective low friction seal on the distal edge and the adjacent side surfaces of the window glass.
The lips 14, 16, being flexible, move apart as the window glass enters the channel but have sufficient resilience so that the surfaces 14A and 16A are pressed adequately against the sides of the glass.
The layers 12A, 14A and 16A may be formed on and fixed to the surface 12 and the lips 14 and 16 in any suitable way. For example, strips of the low friction polymeric material, pre-cut to appropriate size, may be adhesively secured to the surface 12 and the lips 14 and 16. Instead, the layers may be formed in position by spraying.
The window channel may take other suitable forms. It is not necessary, for example, to incorporate a reinforcing metal carrier 10. In some applications, there may be less then three layers 12A, 14A and 16A. For example, there may be two layers only, arranged in a manner corresponding to the layers 14A and 16A. Instead, there might be only one such layer, arranged in the manner of layer 12A.
Figure 2 shows a modified form of the window channel of Figure 1. In the channel of Figure 2, the layers 12A, 14A and 16Aare replaced by strips 12B, 12C, 14B, 14C, 16B and 16C of low friction polymeric material which are triangular in cross-section and present linear apical surfaces making line contact with the window glass. These strips may be fixed in position in any suitable way. Figure 2 shows how they may be partially recessed in the material of the surface 12 and of the lips 14 and 16. The strips could be of other appropriate cross-sectional shape and could be present only on the base 12, or only on the lips 14,16.
Figure 3 shows a door seal in diagrammatic form which is pre-formed to fit a door opening in a vehicle body. In this particular example, the door opening is the rear door opening of a four-doorvehicle.
Figure 4 shows, to an enlarged scale, one form which the door seal may take in the region A of Figure 3. As shown in Figure 4, the door seal is in the form of a channel-shaped mounting portion 20 and a tubular sealing portion 22. The channel-shaped mounting portion 20 may be made of extruded plastics material having an embedded metal carrier, which may be of similar form to the metal carrier 10 shown in Figure 1. The plastics material may be arranged to define gripping lips 23 on the inside surfaces of the channel.
The sealing portion 22 is preferably made of soft plastics or rubber material, such as foamed consistency, and may be extruded simultaneously with the material of the mounting portion 20 or may be adhesively secured along the external surface thereof. In use, the mounting portion 20 is placed over a mounting flange which is part of the vehicle body and runs around the vehicle door opening. In this way, the mounting portion 20 supports the sealing section 22 so that it runs around the vehicle door opening on the external side thereof. The door closes onto the sealing portion 20 which is thus compressed to form an effective weather seal.
As shown in Figure 4, the sharp corner at the region A (see Fig. 3) is formed by means of a mitre join between two sections of the strip which are brought together and adhesively secured to each other. Other forms of making the required sharp corner are known. For example, the sealing strip may be integral at the corner, being bent to a sharp curve, and an additional triangular-shaped leaf portion may be adhesively secured to the outside edge of the sealing portion 22 at the apex of the corner so as to cover the gap where the curved mounting portion 20 parts from the apex of the mounting flange.
As shown in Figure 4, the outer surface of the sealing portion 22 carries a layer 24 of low friction polymeric material in the region of the corner. The layer 24 may be applied in any suitable way, such as in one of the ways described above in relation to Figure 1 for example. The purpose of the layer 24 is to provide a low friction covering at the corner in the region A, and a similar layer may be applied to the sealing portion in the region B at the lower corner (Fig. 3). Regions A and B are regions positioned in the hinge edge of the door. When the door closes, the part of the door at the hinge edge which makes contact with the sealing strip moves through a significant distance (4 or 5 centimetres for example) sideways across the outer surface of the sealing strip, due to the geometry of the hinge. Therefore, as the door closes, not only does it exert a compressive force generally perpendicular to the outwardly facing surface of the sealing strip but also exerts a force perpendicular to this direction. The layers 24 provide low friction surfaces which are very effective in preventing the latter force from straining the sealing portion 22 and distorting its position with respect to the door frame or even pulling it off the door frame.
Such distortion or pull-off would of course adversely affect the sealing function of the strip.
Layers similar to the layers 24 may be applied to other regions of the sealing strip where low friction is required.
Layers of low friction polymeric material may also be applied to other configurations of sealing strip.
For example, they may be applied to glazing guide strips used on vehicle bodies against which the window glass slides such as so-called waist seals, such as shown in Figure 5.
In Figure 5, the outer vehicle body panel 30 terminates in an edge portion 32 along which runs a strip 34 of rubber or similar material having an integral hollow sealing portion 36. The strip 34 is held fixed to the edge portion 32 by means of clips spaced at intervals along the edge portion, one being shown at 38. The clips may be made of metal with tongs 40 by which they grip the edge portion 32 and the strip 34 and hold them together.
The sealing portion 36 supports a layer 42 of low friction polymeric material, against which the window glass 44 slides.
The waist seal may of course take other different forms.
