Abstract

An air filter element comprises a tubular wall 12 with a filter medium 18 extending completely across its interior and an annular wall 24 at one end having an inner soil flexible sealing ring 30 of flat cross-section designed to seal round a spigot 34 in the enclosing housing. Filter medium 18 may be pleated paper, polyurethane foam or cellular layers containing active carbon. Wall 12 may be spun-moulded resin 14 in a metal shell 16, and wall 24 may be resin. Cover 34 is removable for changing the filter element. <IMAGE>

Description

Fluid Filter This invention relates to fluid filters, and is especially concerned with air-filtering elements comprising a part adapted to be fitted onto a cylindrical or tubular spigot in a casing or duct.
The aim of the invention is to provide a filtering element with an effective annular sealing member which fits over the spigot so as to provide a fluid-tight seal between the filtering element and the part of the casing supporting the spigot.
With this aim in view, the invention is directed to a fluid filtering element comprising a tubular outer wall having a filtering medium extending completely across the cross-section so that no fluid can pass through the element without passing through the filtering medium, the tubular wall being provided at or near one of its ends with an inwardly-directed annular end wall provided on its inner periphery with an annular sealing member of soft flexible sealing material such as neoprene, the outer peripheral portion of the sealing member being received and held by bonding in an annular slot in the said inner periphery of the end wall and having an inner peripheral portion projecting radially inwards therefrom, the sealing member as a whole being in the form of a thin annular disc with its inner projecting portion being easily flexible out of its radial disposition when the end wall is pushed over a spigot in a casing adapted to contain the filtering element.
An example of a fluid filtering element in accordance with the invention is shown in the accompanying drawing which illustrates the element in a filter casing as seen in cross-section.
The drawing shows an air-filtering element 10 having a cylindrical wall 12 composed of a spun-moulded inner lining 14 of a mouldable material such as epoxy resin, polyester resin, polyurethane resin and/or a hightemperature resistant sealant and an outer shell 16 of metal such as stainless steel, galvanised steel or other suitable metal. However, the metal outer shell 16 may not be necessary in all instances. In other words, the element could be moulded entirely of one of the nonmetallic materials mentioned above. Extending across the entire inner cross-section of the cylindrical wall 12 is an air-filtering medium 18 which here takes the form of pleated air-filtering paper. It is to be understood, however, that some other air filtering medium can be used instead, such as a plurality of cellular layers with the cells thereof containing granules or other particles of activated carbon.Or, one or more layers of foamed synthetic plastics material such as polyurethane foam can be used as a filtering medium.
The lower end 20 of the filtering medium 18 stops short of the lower end of the cylindrical wall 12 so that a space 22 is formed within the cylindrical wall. This space 22 is partially bounded at its lower end by an annular end wall 24 which is secured to the lower end of the cylindrical wall 12. The end wall 24 extends radially inwards from its connection with the cylindrical wall 12 and is preferably made of a mouldable material such as epoxy resin so that it can be sealed onto the cylindrical wall 12.
The inner periphery 26 of the end wall is provided with an annular slot 28 which receives the outer peripheral portion of a thin disc-like annular sealing member 30 which is firmly secured in the slot 28 by bonding. This means that, when the filtering element 10 is inserted into the filter casing 32 after the top cover 34 of the latter has been removed, the sealing member 30 can make fluid-tight sealing engagement with the outer surface of a tubular spigot 34 after the end wall 24 has been pushed over the spigot. As will be seen, the spigot 34 is supported on an annular wall 36 in the filter casing 32 so that the end wall 24 of the filtering element can rest on the wall 36 of the casing.
Air or other fluid to be filtered by the illustrated filtering element 10 enters the filter casing 32 through an inlet 38 formed in one portion of the cylindrical wall of the casing 32 and then passes downwardly through the filtering medium 18, through the spigot 34, and out of the casing 32 through an outlet 40 which is likewise formed in the cylindrical wall of the casing 32.

A fluid filtering element comprising a tubular outer wall having a filtering medium extending completely across its cross-section so that no fluid can pass through the element without passing through the filtering medium, the tubular wall being provided at or near one of its ends with an inwardly-directed annular end wall which is provided on its inner periphery with an annular sealing member of soft flexible sealing material such as neoprene, the outer peripheral portion of the sealing member being received and held by bonding in an annular slot in the said inner periphery of the end wall and having an inner peripheral portion projecting radially inwards therefrom, the sealing member as a whole being in the form of a thin annular disc with its inner projecting portion being easily flexible out of its radial disposition when the end wall is pushed over a spigot in a casing adapted to contain the filtering element.
2. A fluid filtering element according to claim 1, in which the tubular outer wall is composed of a spun-moulded inner lining of a mouldable material such as epoxy resin, polyester resin, polyurethane resin and/or a hightemperature resistant sealant, and an outer shell of metal such as stainless steel or galvanised steel.
3. A fluid filtering element according to claim 1 or claim 2, in which the filtering medium comprises pleated air-filtering paper, or a plurality of cellular layers with the cells thereof containing granules or other particles of activated carbon, or one or more layers of foamed synthetic plastics material such as polyurethane foam.
4. A fluid filtering element according to any one of claims 1-3, in which that end of the filtering medium nearer the annular end wall stops short of the respective end of the tubular outer wall so that a space is formed within the tubular outer wall.
